PREFACE Since 9/11 the veterinary care of Military Working Dogs (MWDs) has assumed a greater importance. The role of the working dog has never been more visible and more appreciated. At this writing there are a large number of MWDs deployed throughout the world in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Many people both in and out of uniform are coming to realize that MWDs are among the most valuable and cost-effective counterterrorism tools we have. Before 9/11 detector dogs and their skills were largely taken for granted, even downplayed. Comments like: “MWDs are low-tech”; and “Dogs will be replaced by sensors, imaging techniques and computers” were not uncommon. Detector dogs have become a very visible front-line protective measure against bomb threats – check out the headlines on suicide bombers to see what our terrorist enemies are up to. Then check out the film clips that show security forces in action – the dogs are everywhere! These are reminders that no other tool in the arsenal can match the efficiency, mobility, adaptability and field readiness of a working dog. So, what’s new – why publish a new edition now? Yes 9/11 did change things – this edition now has guidelines for MWDs exposed to Anthrax. This third edition of the Handbook also contains new information about the prophylactic laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy program that aims to protect our most “at-risk” dogs from GDV. We also provide guidelines on transitioning from once daily feeding to feeding two “meals” a day; the Dog Center now feeds over 500 MWDs twice a day. Additionally we have updated information about MWD Adoption – a program that has come of age in the 2 years since the publication of the second edition. Also in an effort to provide a “one-stop” resource for working dog policy, this edition now incorporates topics that were formerly available only as VETCOM policy letters. These and other revisions make this new MWD Handbook one of the most up to date resources for military veterinarians caring for MWD’s and other Federal Agency working dogs. All veterinary personnel involved in anesthesia should familiarize themselves with these standards, as some previously used agents (such as butorphanol / acepromazine / glycopyrrolate combination, tiletamine / zolazepam, and xylazine) have been removed from the guidance The world will continue to change and our veterinary care will also change as our knowledge, new technology, and improved therapeutics become available. Our commitment to the health care of MWDs is a constant. Keep up the good work!

Excerpt from A Guide to the Dissection of the Dog During recent years the feeling that there was room for a book in English dealing with the anatomy of the dog has been steadily gaining ground. Doubt less, in the opinion of many, the gap can be adequately filled only by a systematic treatise similar to the classic Anatomie des Hundes of Ellenberger and Baum. Until some such work makes its appearance, perhaps the present publication may serve as a temporary means of supplying the deficiency. For several reasons it was decided to introduce the subject of canine anatomy to the English reader in the form of short notes planned to aid him in his desire to obtain first-hand knowledge by dissection. Herein are given directions which experience has shown will help the student to display the various organs and structures in an orderly and profitable manner. The descriptions which follow are purposely given in the briefest possible form, in order that the dissection of the whole animal may be accomplished within a reasonable length of time. Lurchers and sighthounds have seen a huge rise in popularity over the past 40 years, and where once the lurcher was the shadowy, unseen tool of the poacher, it now enjoys a more legitimate role as a modern day pest control aid, as well as being valued as a companion and family pet. The pure sighthound breeds have always had their aficionados, whether as workers, pets or show and racing dogs; this book is written with all running dogs in mind, the term by which the author refers to lurchers and sighthounds alike in this book. Running dogs are athletes, which need committed care and understanding if they are to remain sound and healthy in their work, and the author has drawn upon her many years’ experience with working lurchers in order to compile a useful reference book for fellow owners. Written in a down to earth style this manual explains how to rear, feed and prepare the running dog for a healthy life, whether that involves strenuous work, competition or as a companion animal; how to avoid injury where possible and how to recognise specific types of injury when they do occur; how to treat them yourself and when to see the vet.

The Dog Care Handbook is a self-help book written for thoughtful dog owners in the UK. It will improve your knowledge of dogs, your relationship with your vet and your understanding of important and common diseases that our dogs might develop. Many dog owners find that visiting the vet is stressful and costly. The outcomes can sometimes be unsatisfactory. Every dog owner should be able to find a vet they can trust who will respect your perspective and work within your budget. This book will help. The text covers the entire lifespan of pet dogs from puppyhood to old age, in chronological order. Preventative health is covered in detail. Major conditions of the skin, the heart, the joints, the kidneys and other organs are explained fully in lay language. One chapter deals specifically with emergencies, another with home nursing, a third covers old age. Colourful anecdotes and case examples are sprinkled throughout. Numerous illustrations are provided which make it easy to medicate your dog or provide first-aid. The information and advice in this book are based on up-to-date scientific evidence where-ever possible. When there is a paucity of knowledge the author gives his own perspective based on years of clinical practice in the UK. No other book for the public provides such a wide-ranging remit covering the health and well-being of pet dogs.
