It was in the cold bleak autumn following the spectacular Dragon murder case[1] that Philo Vance was confronted with what was probably the subtlest and most diabolical criminal problem of his career. Unlike his other cases, this mystery was one of poisoning. But it was not an ordinary poisoning case: it involved far too clever a technique, and was thought out to far too many decimal points, to be ranked with even such famous crimes as the Cordelia Botkin, Molineux, Maybrick, Buchanan, Bowers and Carlyle Harris cases.

'The Dragon Murder Case' is a detective novel by S. S. Van Dine, the pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright. In the depths of an opulent estate nestled in the heart of northern Manhattan, a mysterious guest takes an ill-fated plunge into the enchanted waters of a swimming pool, vanishing without a trace. As the echoes of his demise reverberate through the corridors, whispers of a malevolent myth emerge—an ancient dragon poised to devour the reckless. But it is the cunning and astuteness of the renowned detective, Philo Vance, that unveils the truth hidden amidst the intertwining worlds of mythical beasts and felonious minds. In a riveting tale that melds ancient lore with modern intrigue, Vance embarks on a relentless pursuit to unmask the perpetrator behind this treacherous act. Will he succeed in deciphering this perilous puzzle before darkness engulfs them all?

This early work by S. S. Van Dine was originally published in 1933 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'The Dragon Murder Case' is one of Van Dine's novels of crime and mystery. S. S. Van Dine was born Willard Huntington Wright in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1888. He attended St. Vincent College, Pomona College and Harvard University, but failed to graduate, leaving to cultivate contacts he had made in the literary world. At the age of twenty-one, Wright began his professional writing career as literary editor of the Los Angeles Times. In 1926, Wright published his first S. S. Van Dine novel, The Benson Murder Case. Wright went on to write eleven more mysteries. The first few books about his upper-class amateur sleuth, Philo Vance, were so popular that Wright became wealthy for the first time in his life. His later books declined in popularity as the reading public's tastes in mystery fiction changed, but during the late twenties and early thirties his work was very successful.

The Kidnap Murder Case by S. S. Van Dine This new Van Dine kidnap-murder case deals with two of the most unusual crimes in the whole record of Philo Vance's criminological researches. Kasper Kenting, a playboy and ne'er-do-well, disappears from his ancestral home, the 'Purple House, ' in West 86th Street, with all the indications pointing to a kidnapping. Both District Attorney John F.-X, Markham and Sergeant Ernest Heath of the Homicide Bureau participate, with Philo Vance, in the exciting investigation. In The Kidnap Murder Case Philo Vance runs into the gravest personal danger, and it is through the accuracy of his aim, at the crucial moment, that he saves Sergeant Heath's life as well as his own. The locale of this amazing crime shifts from one of the most fascinating residential landmarks in mid-town Manhattan to a sordid and obscure hovel on the upper east side. The account moves with arresting swiftness to a dramatic climax and will appeal even to those readers who heretofore have not been especially interested in this type of fiction.
