Shattered Dreams at Kilimanjaro covers the period from the establishment of the former colony of German East Africa in the late 19th century until the formation of the independent State of Tanganyika in 1961. The book focuses on a small group of German settlers who ventured into a new world - German East Africa - to establish farms and businesses in the Mt Kilimanjaro region. This venture was ultimately not successful due, in part, to the tropical diseases contracted by some of the settlers, whilst others were disillusioned with the poor economic returns. The main reason for its failure, however, was the outbreak of World War I and the devastating effects this had on the settlers, culminating in dispossession and deportation. Before the war the settlers had achieved a great deal by clearing virgin land and cultivating it with coffee and an array of vegetables and fruits. Others had started businesses such as building and flour milling. After World War I the former German colony became the British Mandate Territory of Tanganyika. Some former settlers returned only to lose everything again when World War II broke out and all Germans were interned and their properties confiscated. Many of the settlers were deported to Germany in 1940; others were interned in Africa for the duration of the war before being repatriated to Germany. It is fitting to record the history of these adventurous and hard working people. They overcame severe personal hardships and disappointments and, in the end, earned little reward for their toils. Nevertheless, they left a lasting legacy because agriculture was brought to a region in tropical East Africa from which crops are still grown and food produced. Similarly, their businesses gave rise to ongoing enterprises in that region. The book is illustrated with many historical photographs.

What happens when a petite, menopausal, southern Mississippi Jewish homemaker is offered the adventure of a lifetime to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak? As a last minute invitee to fill a cancelled spot, she scours the internet for advice from a woman's perspective on the experience, but finds nothing. And thus so, was inspired to keep this journal account from beginning to end, encouraged by Phil Gray's book "Mt. Kilimanjaro Via the Marangu Route: Tourist Route My Ass" written upon his return .... er, survival. She finds the humorous "ups & downs" just too ridiculous to keep it all to herself.

Six months later, he was lying on the cold gravel trail at 18,000 feet, panting and hacking in the darkness. Dorr is a typical marketing exec by day but, amped up by his re-acquaintance with a romantic interest, he gained the determination to pursue one of his lifelong dreams -- summiting Kilimanjaro. When Dorr left behind the familiarity of his weekend-warrior lifestyle in Southern California to reach the top of the 19,340-foot peak, he didn't realize he would cross a threshold to a new way of life. Pole pole (pronounced poh-lay, poh-lay), means slowly, slowly. These words are the heartbeat of my dream to climb Kilimanjaro. My dad climbed Kilimanjaro in 1948 and used these words every time he spoke to me of his climb. He said, "Follow the pace of the guide, pole pole; slowly, slowly and you will make it to the top."Pole pole for me is not only the pace set on the mountain but how my dream was instilled in my heart...beating slowly, slowly over a lifetime until at age fifty, I heard my dad speak the words, "Sandy, you can climb Kilimanjaro, you can make it to the top. Follow the guide, pole pole, slowly, slowly."Come follow my father's footprints as he climbed Kilimanjaro in 1948. Come follow me as my dream, God's calling me, went from hesitation to reality to put my own footprints, pole pole, on top of Kilimanjaro in 2013.Read for yourself as I dared to dream, dared to climb--not just any mountain--but Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, East Africa. Kilimanjaro is the highest, free-standing mountain on the African continent, standing at 19,341 ft. high.Discover for yourself from where this dream came. Find out what the climb was like. I was changed as I dared to dream, to struggle, to find a way to climb Kilimanjaro. And, yes, I saw God on the mountain. God "stirred the pot" many times by calling me throughout my life to come see and climb her. What a journey it was leaving my footprints on Kilimanjaro! Pole pole, the journey begins.

Dr. Joel Batzofin was born in Africa, but he'd never considered climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. As a physician with a thriving Manhattan fertility medicine practice, he'd never contemplated climbing any mountain, much less a summit in Tanzania. But when he agreed to join his daughter Tammy on a trek up the peak, he embarked on the greatest adventure of his life. Batzofin and Tammy quickly learned to appreciate the conveniences of home. The terrain was rough. Their eclectic traveling party included family, friends, trail guides, and some unpleasant tourists. Personalities sometimes clashed, but the beautiful, dangerous countryside and the impoverished, hopeful local people awakened Batzofin's spirit in ways he couldn't have predicted. Thoughts of his mentally and physically disabled brother, his many hopeful fertility patients, and the faces of the poor children around him led Batzofin to donate his medical energy and financial resources to a small rural hospital. When he finally reached the summit, Batzofin realized his perspective on life had changed forever. Through his memoir, One Step at a Time, Batzofin shares his Kilimanjaro experience, from physical hardships to philosophical musings. He hopes to inspire others to find the powerful lessons that lurk beneath unexpected challenges.

Everyone has that one dream, planted as a seed when they were a child, that they've all but given up on after realising the hardships and responsibilities that come with growing up and starting a family. Always lingering in the back of your mind, only a few people have the courage and the will to follow through with such lofty ambitions. For author Rod Wood, that dream was to climb the beautifully daunting Kilimanjaro. Unfortunately, life and depression hit Rod like an oncoming truck. Dissatisfied with his day to day living and unable to put a finger on why, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery to recapture the very same whimsy and joy he felt while learning about this legendary continent as a child. Not content to let his life-long desire pass him by a second time, Rod begins to etch out the plans that would change his life forever. With a new-found confidence and commitment to discovery, Rod sets out on the adventure we've all dreamed of: to fulfil our childhood ambitions.
