The story begins in 1801 with lieutenant d'Hubert walking the streets of Strasbourg, searching for a fellow lieutenant called Féraud who is wanted by their division general. He interrupts Féraud while he is being entertained by a popular lady at her party and Féraud takes the interruption and the consequent order to stay at his home personally, thinking that his honour has been injured. They end up fighting their first duel almost immediately, but Féraud is not satisfied by the encounter. Thus begins a tale that spans the next 16 years and follows the campaigns of Bonaparte where Féraud seeks out and challenges d'Hubert to various duels whenever a momentary peace allows him to do so.

How is this book unique? Font adjustments & biography included Unabridged (100% Original content) Illustrated About The Duel and Other Stories by Anton Chekhov "This captivating collection of short stories, selected from works written during Chekhov's prolific period, displays those qualities for which the Russian author and playwright is famous: a natural aptitude for detail, dialogue, humor, and compassion. The six masterfully executed tales, reprinted here in the authoritative Constance Garnett translation, include ""The Darling,"" a poignant piece supporting the claim that life has no meaning without love; ""The Kiss,"" a fanciful confection recounting an officer's brief encounter with an unknown woman; as well as ""Anna on the Neck,"" ""The Man in a Case,"" ""The Malefactor,"" and the title story. As noted by author John Barth, ""Chekhov is a superb anatomist of the human heart and an utter master of his literary means. The details of scene and behavior, the emotions registered -- seldom bravura, typically muted and complex, often as surprising to the characters themselves as to the reader but always right -- move, astonish, and delight us line after line, story after story."""

Over decades, on every occasion they chanced to meet, they fought. Both satiric and deeply sad, this masterful tale treats both the futility of war and the absurdity of false honor, war's necessary accessory.

An international award-winning picture book with increasingly detailed water-color art begins as a story about quarrels and conflicts, but is, above all, about making and finding peace. Loosely based on the duel scene from War & Peace, this story will help spark conversations about what can happen when you turn away from violence. Two men argue in a distant and cold country. Words pierce and injure their hearts. In order to resolve the problem once and for all, two men decide to fight a duel. They start back to back, each one counting a hundred paces before turning to shoot. 1, 2, 3, 4 . . . There they go, walking away. So many steps separating them. 5, 6, 7, 8. . . . One keeps walking, and walking, and walking some more, and his surroundings become more animated and vibrant, each page burgeoning with color and activity, circuses and marching bands and more. But what, he wonders, is the other one thinking? What lies ahead for them both? How far do you go before your anger dissipates and you crave the company of a friend? A story with a suprising turn of events, The Duel will help young readers see what can happen when you choose to turn away from violence and in the direction of curiosity and friendship and an open heart.
