[Abstract] The purpose of this thesis is to research the question "What is the experience of being an adult dyslexic," using the heuristic model. By conducting qualitative interviews with seven co-researchers who have exhibited or demonstrated the syndrome or symptoms of dyslexia throughout their life I have accumulated the research data. The co-researchers shared themselves in a personal way in the interviews. They opened themselves to revisit old wounds and almost forgotten painful memories. As we shall see, these experiences are never far from the mind's eye of the dyslexic. The study is significant in that it includes the personal experience of the author and seven co-researchers on being in their world as adult dyslexics. The major themes that emerged from the research were shame, emotional pain, hiding, continually having to be on guard, low self-esteem, and a sense of hopelessness and helplessness. Also, there are themes of great courage, tenacity, hard work and self-knowledge. The findings in this study have relevance for everyone; dyslexic and non-dyslexic. Dyslexics are always around you, you are never far away from a dyslexic person whether you know it or not. Look around. They are hiding right in front of you. Even dyslexics have a hard time finding other dyslexics.
