Excerpt from History and Topography of the City of York, Vol. 1 of 2: The East Riding of Yorkshire, and a Portion of the West Riding; Embracing a General Review of the Early History of Great Britain, and a General History and Description of the County of York Is presenting this work to the numerous subscribers, it is deemed un necessary to expatiate on the value and utility of works of this nature. To all classes a well digested and faithfully compiled History and Topography of their own District must be an useful and interesting acquisition. For a people to be ignorant of their own history, and the scenes and circumstances amid which they have sprung, is degrading in the extreme, says a recent writer, and is not unfrequeutly productive of evil. It is only a necessary wisdom to be able to relate the early history of the locality in which Provi dence has placed us; to know its peculiarities; and to have marked its progress. The study of History, and particularly that which is Local, writes an eminent authority, may be numbered among the most important pursuits of man. This collection of essays by leading experts in manuscript studies sheds new light on ways to approach medieval texts in their manuscript context. Each contribution provides groundbreaking insight into the field of medieval textual culture, demonstrating the various interconnections between medieval material and literary traditions. The contributors’ work aids reconstruction of the period’s writing practices, as contextual factors surrounding the texts provide clues to the ‘manuscript experience’. Topics such as scribal practice and textual providence, glosses, rubrics, page lay-out, and even page ruling, are addressed in a manner illustrative and suggestive of textual practice of the time, while the volume further considers the interface between the manuscript and early textual communities. Looking at medieval inventories of books no longer extant, and addressing questions such as ownership, reading practices and textual production, Medieval Texts in Context addresses the fundamental interpretative issue of how scribe-editors worked with an eye to their intended audience. An understanding of the world inhabited by the scribal community is made use of to illuminate the rationale behind the manufacture of devotional texts. The combination of approaches to the medieval vernacular manuscript presented in this volume is unique, marking a major, innovative contribution to manuscript studies.

The drama of the English Middle Ages is perennially popular with students and theatre audiences alike, and this is an updated edition of a book which has established itself as a standard guide to the field. The Cambridge Companion to Medieval English Theatre, second edition continues to provide an authoritative introduction and an up-to-date, illustrated guide to the mystery cycles, morality drama and saints' plays which flourished from the late fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth centuries. The book emphasises regional diversity in the period and engages with the literary and particularly the theatrical values of the plays. Existing chapters have been revised and updated where necessary, and there are three entirely new chapters, including one on the cultural significance of early drama. A thoroughly revised reference section includes a guide to scholarship and criticism, an enlarged classified bibliography and a chronological table.

Excerpt from Dialect of the West Riding of Yorkshire: A Short History of Leeds and Other Towns In this little book is an ethnological survey of the various races of men who have successively made incursions to this country, and the words they each have left behind, which have gone to build up the English we now speak. How words from one race have predominated in one locality, and become obsolete in another, thus forming what is termed dialect (not patois), is explained. Dialects may be trivialities to the purist, but thinking men consider them forces, racy of the soil, which will not readily die out. Many years have I occupied in studying various dialects, English and Continental; and in comparing them with that of Yorkshire, I find them all related more or less, being descended from the Aryan stock. Here are no fanciful derivations. My thanks are due for valuable assistance to Clement Blackburn, Esq., of Brow Lee, near Brighouse, who is part owner of this book.
