The treatise on the early history of Glastonbury by the great twelfth century historian William of Malmesbury is a crucial source of our knowledge of Glastonbury in the Saxon period, and contains important evidence on the obscure origins of the abbey. Because it was recognised as such by the monks at the time, it was rewritten very soon after its composition to include new stories about the abbey's history and estates, a process which went on well into the thirteenth century. As a result, the best available texts contain a great deal which was not in William's original work, and although the problem has long been known, no full-scale attempt to disentangle the original work from the later editions has been attempted previously. Mr Scott provides an edition and translation of the text as it has come down to us, and, by reference to William's other works, prints a reconstruction of the original. His introduction is a study of William's own historical work, his sources and skills as a historian, followed by an examination of the motives for the reworking of the text and the factors which influenced the creation of the great Glastonbury legends: the apostolic foundation of the 'old church', the arrival of Joseph of Arimathea and the burial there of King Arthur.

John of Glastonbury's chronicle represents an attempt to summarise the lore and learning about Glastonbury Abbey and its past available in the fourteenth century, a body of knowledge which changed very little before the Reformation. A survey of the landed endowment of Glastonbury Abbey before 1066, with a history of its estates. The early history of the religious community at Glastonbury has been the subject of much speculation and imaginative writing, but there are few sources which genuinely further our knowledge of Glastonbury Abbey in the Anglo-Saxonperiod. This has resulted in a lack of serious historical research and hence the neglect of an important ecclesiastical establishment. This study brings together the evidence of royal and episcopal grants of land and combines it with material from Domesday Book, to produce a survey of the landed endowment of Glastonbury Abbey before 1066, and an analysis of the history of its Anglo-Saxon estates. Although there is too little data to formulate a complete account of the Abbey's early landholdings, the surviving evidence, collected together here, outlines a history for each place named in connection with the pre-Conquest religious house; in addition, each case helps to establish an overall framework for the life-cycle of the Anglo-Saxon estate, building on our understanding of actual conditions of tenure and of the various fortunes ecclesiastical land might experience.
