Description: The Upanishads are the central scriptures of Hinduism. They represent some of the most important literary products in the history of Indian culture and religion, both because they played a critical role in the development of religious ideas in India and because they are our greatest source for the religious, social, and intellectual history of ancient India. Composed at a time of great social, economic, and religious change, the Upanisads document the transition from the archaic ritualism of the Veda into new religious ideas and institutions. In the Introduction Olivelle provides a solid background for understanding these ancient documents. He examines both the social background of the Upanisads and their literary history: authorship, chronology, and geographical provenance. He describes the ritual practices and terminology, Vedic conceptions of the cosmos and of human physiology and psychology. Finally, Olivelle examines the central Upanisadic preoccupation of finding interconnections among the diverse elements of the universe. The copious notes present some of the most present philological and historical research on this material and give the reader detailed explanations of difficult passages. The list of names identifies all the major individuals and geographical names occurring in the Upanisads. Two charts present the texts of the Vedic corpus and the plan of the Vedic sacrificial arena. A map shows the geographical areas mentioned in the Upanisads and the places where the different Upanisads may have been composed. A detailed index of subjects is also provided. The first major English translation of the ancient Upanisads for over half a century, Olivelle's work incorporates the most recent historical and philological scholarship and presents the Sanskrit text and translation on facing pages. All major variant readings and emendations suggested by scholars are given in the notes, which, together with an informative introduction and detailed explanatory notes, make this edition ideal for both specialists and students of Indian religion and culture.

The translator's idea of rendering the Upanishads into clear simple English, accessible to Occidental readers, had its origin in a visit paid to a Boston friend in 1909. The gentleman, then battling with a fatal malady, took from his library shelf a translation of the Upanishads and, opening it, expressed deep regret that the obscure and unfamiliar form shut from him what he felt to be profound and vital teaching.

Chapter I of this study, which discusses the older Upanisads, viz., the Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad and the Chandogya Upanisad, describes at the outset how the idea of the Supreme Being, the unique mystic power, was conceived in the words Brahman and Atman and how these two entities merged with each other and became identical. It then discusses the doctrine of metempsychosis as evolved from the relation between the Supreme Being and the world of plurality. In this period, the magician-priest begins to become a philosopher. Chapter II deals with later Upanisads like Kathaka Upanisad, Maitrayana Upanisad and Svetasvatara Upanisad. This period clearly reveals beginnings of the formulation of a system in the form of Samkhya Doctrine and the Yoga. Here the ultimate goal of human yearning, the salvation from suffering, becomes visible. In short, we perceive the development of thought of the Indian Philosophy from an impersonal god (of impersonal powers) to a personal god. But interestingly, a system strongly enforcing the elements of Yoga decisively rejected theism and adhered to the pessimistic thought of Indian mysticism: the Doctrine of Buddhism. This is described in Chapter III.

The present volume is intended as a supplement to Lanman's Sanskrit Reader. It is hoped that its focus on the early upanisads makes the transition easier from Lanman's classical and epic selections to the language of the Vedic tradition.

This is the first in the series of three books I plan to do on the ten principal Upanishads. This book carries the eight of them. The second one would carry the Chandogya Upanishad and the third, the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad. The eight Upanishads this work carries are Isha, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittariya, and Aitareya. Hymn- by- hymn translation followed by explanatory comments mark this work. This is meant for the non-specialist reader. Because this is meant to serve as an introduction into the Upanishads. The word Upanishad means 'to sit close by'. Sri Sankara, the 8th cy saint, interprets it as 'that which destroys ignorance'. They were written in Sanskrit, that belongs to the family of Indo-European languages. The Upanishads are some of the most esoteric and mystical works of all time. They are a call from the long, dark tunnel of time. They stand apart as much in their lonesomeness, as in their robustness. At times they are as abstract and dense in their other-worldliness as enticing in their subtle, tender connect with this world. They are roughly from two thousand to three thousand years ago. their count varies. The Indian theological tradition places it at 108, but the important ones number less than twenty and the most important of them just ten. They form the concluding parts of the four Vedas viz Rg, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. The word veda means wisdom. The vedas are considered as literature revealed from sources divine. They are believed to be the utterances of the great sages of the past with illumined vision. They were supposed to have been heard directly from divine sources by the sages and subsequently passed down the generations by word of mouth, until they were written down about a little more than thousand years ago. The central concern of the Upanishads was to find the connection between the cosmic reality and the human person. This knowledge is usually hidden from the people, but it constitutes knowledge that would deliver one from mortal existence. Their chief concern is with the spirit that dwells within beings. Not easily understood by logical reasoning, they need to be understood through personal spiritual experience. In ancient times, the transfer of this knowledge to all and sundry were strictly prohibited. Only a qualified master could impart it, that too to a student selected after long observation, careful scrutiny, and stiff testing. These works mark the departure from the rigid ritualism of the Vedas into a more open , inclusive, and flexible philosophy. The religions that emerged in India not long after the early Upanishads borrowed heavily from the new concepts that marked the Upanishads. The Upanishads helped subsequent generations to formulate their views on the secrets of human existence. Either by themselves or through religions like Buddhism , they influenced the cultural lives of nations outside India's borders such as Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Korea etc. Indian thought had constantly turned to these works for rejuvenation in times of cultural and religious stagnation.
