One of our most important water resources, especially in time of drought, is the groundwater. This is the layer of water in the ground in the "saturation zone" where all voids are filled with water. It lies below the aeration zone and the soil, and since water reaching it has been filtered by the earth, groundwater is usually of a high grade. It is less easy to reach than surface water and partly for that reason, its pollution is insidious. For toxic substances and the like, after filtering down through the earth, can be carried long distances and only be discovered at an abstraction point. Moreover, these substances are often chemically fixed or decomposed by the time they have seeped down to groundwater level, and they can remain there, dangerous but undetected, for long periods of time.
