The Earth S Atmosphere written by Kshudiram Saha and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-14 with Science categories.

The author has sought to incorporate in the book some of the fundamental concepts and principles of the physics and dynamics of the atmosphere, a knowledge and understanding of which should help an average student of science to comprehend some of the great complexities of the earth-atmosphere system, in which a thr- way interaction between the atmosphere, the land and the ocean tends to maintain an overall mass and energy balance in the system through physical and dynamical processes. The book, divided into two parts and consisting of 19 chapters, introduces only those aspects of the subject that, according to the author, are deemed essential to meet the objective in view. The emphasis is more on clarity and understanding of physical and dynamical principles than on details of complex theories and ma- ematics. Attempt is made to treat each subject from ?rst principles and trace its development to present state, as far as possible. However, a knowledge of basic c- culus and differential equations is sine qua non especially for some of the chapters which appear later in the book.

The book describes the structure, composition and evolution of the Earth, the main geological processes occurring on it, and how some crucial environmental matters that are amply debated in the media (e.g. pollution, greenhouse effect) can be fully understood by placing them in the holistic context of the system Earth as a whole. It provides basic information on a series of key geological issues, from the structure and composition of the Earth to the large-scale processes that characterize our planet, such as rock alteration and sedimentation, magmatism, geomagnetism, seismicity, plate tectonics, cyclical migration of chemical elements through various Earth reservoirs (Geochemical Cycles), and evolution of the planet from Hadean to present. It intends to reach a wide readership, which is interested in our planet and wish to have a general and comprehensive view of its origin, evolution and activity. Potential readership includes undergraduate and advanced undergraduate students in Geology and other scientific disciplines, and any moderately- to well-educated people interested in the surrounding world and eager to gain a basic knowledge of the Earth and to reach an integrated view of how our planet is working.

The amount of water in the Earth's atmosphere is tiny compared to all other sources of water on our planet, fresh or otherwise. However, this tiny amount of water is fundamental to most aspects of human life. Clouds, for instance, contain about two orders of magnitude less water in condensed form than the water vapor in air, but this miniscule amount of water is an essential stage of those processes that deliver all freshwater upon which human life depends. This influence is complex and not entirely understood, yet exerts profound effects on climate and on those forces that affect climate change. Thus understanding the moist processes that determine the supply of water to the atmosphere and back to the surface is of some importance. Consequently observations of the distribution and variability of clouds and precipitation have emerged as priority, even as our ability to observe the properties of clouds and precipitation by satellites presently orbiting Earth is unprecedented in the history of space-borne Earth observations. These new capabilities are now delivering important new insights on how water cycles through Earth's atmosphere and a firmer basis to predict how this water cycle evolves and thus how it may alter with climate change.

Earth is, to our knowledge, the only life-bearing body in the Solar System. This extraordinary characteristic dates back almost 4 billion years. How to explain that Earth is teeming with organisms and that this has lasted for so long? What makes Earth different from its sister planets Mars and Venus? The habitability of a planet is its capacity to allow the emergence of organisms. What astronomical and geological conditions concurred to make Earth habitable 4 billion years ago, and how has it remained habitable since? What have been the respective roles of non-biological and biological characteristics in maintaining the habitability of Earth? This unique book answers the above questions by considering the roles of organisms and ecosystems in the Earth System, which is made of the non-living and living components of the planet. Organisms have progressively occupied all the habitats of the planet, diversifying into countless life forms and developing enormous biomasses over the past 3.6 billion years. In this way, organisms and ecosystems "took over" the Earth System, and thus became major agents in its regulation and global evolution. There was co-evolution of the different components of the Earth System, leading to a number of feedback mechanisms that regulated long-term Earth conditions. For millennia, and especially since the Industrial Revolution nearly 300 years ago, humans have gradually transformed the Earth System. Technological developments combined with the large increase in human population have led, in recent decades, to major changes in the Earth's climate, soils, biodiversity and quality of air and water. After some successes in the 20th century at preventing internationally environmental disasters, human societies are now facing major challenges arising from climate change. Some of these challenges are short-term and others concern the thousand-year evolution of the Earth's climate. Humans should become the stewards of Earth.

Earth's water has been recycled for more than 4 billion years. This is thanks to the water cycle, a continuous system in which water moves between bodies of water, the atmosphere, and land. Students will learn about the different states of water and the processes water undergoes as it moves through the water cycle. Colorful photographs and informational diagrams help students visualize the movement of water on Earth. Primary sources add depth to the text by providing real-life examples of this fascinating topic.

Water is one of the essential components necessary for life to exist on Earth. All of Earth's water in all its states, frozen, liquid, and gaseous, make up the hydrosphere. Liquid water exists on the surface of the earth but there are also reservoirs of water underground. Frozen water exists as glaciers, ice caps, and icebergs. This water makes up a special subcategory of the hydrosphere called the cryosphere. Water can even be found in the atmosphere in the form of water vapor. Readers will come to understand how the water cycle tracks water's movement from one phase to the next.
