Since the day an earthquake hit the city of L'Aquila, in central Italy, the area has been shut. No living, social or commercial activity has been permitted within the so-called "red zone", a large area which embraces most of the historical centre. Outside, army vehicles halt anyone trying to enter. Inside, it is a ghost town inhabited by its own phantoms. The feeling of a lifeless place is dreadfully intense. Hundreds of people died in the quake, many thousands had to leave their apartments for good. This reportage jumps over the barriers and take the reader in the heart of the earthquake. It walks the streets, enters the halls, visits the homes to take a look into the rooms. Where time froze. It gives back to the owners the places they have been bereaved. It gives back to the places the life they lack. Text in the book is in English and Italian

The 2016 earthquake in Central Italy affected a wide peripheral area. Six years afterwards, the resident population in the municipalities involved considerably decreased, but assessing to what extent this was due to the earthquake is not straightforward as the demographic trend was already declining in these territories even before that event. This study aims at estimating the earthquake impact by a diff-in-diff event-study approach which allows to test whether before the event the population dynamics were effectively comparable to those of the control group, made up of similar municipalities in terms of geo-morphological and pre-determined urbanization characteristics. The results show that the earthquake significantly exacerbated the population decrease, with an estimated effect corresponding on average to almost two fifths of the reduction actually observed. The impact is statistically significant for the whole area, but its intensity was higher for the municipalities that suffered the most damage. The overall effect was mostly driven by a worsening in internal net migration. An increased share of elderly population was also detected. These findings suggest that resiliency to a natural disaster shock can be lower in peripheral and demographically fragile areas.

'In the wake of the strongest earthquake in Italy for nearly forty years and the many aftershocks that followed, Italians began speaking of the earth beneath our feet as la terra ballerina, the dancing earth. The dance they spoke of was unrelenting.' Foreign correspondent Christine Toomey spent years renovating her glorious, long-abandoned hill-top home in Le Marche, Italy, as a haven of rest from covering crises around the world. But in 2016, the peace and beauty of this beloved landscape were thrown into chaos when a series of powerful earthquakes struck the heart of the Apennines. Wracked with grief for a place still reverberating with seismic aftershocks, Christine decided that one way of preserving the community was to tell its history. Fuelled by the artefacts uncovered in her attic - including oil paintings and lithographs, a map, thick with dust but showing details of the earthquake that obliterated Messina in 1908, and century-old letters belonging to the enigmatic priest who had occupied her house a century earlier - Christine set out on a journey to tell the story of the earthquakes that devastated the region. The result is a heartfelt, insightful and life-affirming story about the places that make us, and the life-changing thunderbolts that can come at all of us, at any time, from any quarter.

This book examines reconstruction and resilience of historic cities and societies from multiple disciplinary and complementary perspectives and, by doing so, it helps researchers and practitioners alike, among them reconstruction managers, urban governance and professionals. The book builds on carefully selected and updated papers accepted for the 2019 Silk Cities international conference on ‘reconstruction, recovery and resilience of historic cities and societies’, the third Silk Cities conference held in L’Aquila, Italy, 10-12 July 2019, working with University of L’Aquila and UCL. This multi-scale, and multidisciplinary book offers cross-sectoral and complimentary voices from multiple stakeholders, including academia, urban governance, NGOs and local populations. It examines post-disaster reconstruction strategies and case studies from Europe, Asia and Latin America that provide a valuable collection for anyone who would like to get a global overview on the subject matter. It thereby enables a deeper understanding of challenges, opportunities and approaches in dealing with historic cities facing disasters at various geographical scales. Additionally, it brings together historical approaches to the reconstruction of historical cities and those of more recent times. Thus, it can be used as a reference book for global understanding of the subject matter.
