English Cultural History, ca. 1815 - 1900, language: English, abstract: The history of Ireland is a turbulent one full of mysterious customs, fiery battles and unwavering pride. Many events have given account to the repeated struggle of the Irish people against invasion and the loss of their freedom. Such an incident also took place in the year 1916. It was probably one of the most important occurrences in Irish history, and it shaped the future of the country for many years to come, all the way until the present time. The event in question is until today known as the Easter Rising. On Easter Monday, the 24 April 1916, a siege was organized that lasted only for 5 days and ended in a massacre. However, the consequences of this comparatively small act of revolution were enormous. The Easter rising heavily influenced the political relations between Ireland and England during the years that followed, and was the foundation stone of Ireland’s militant fight for independence. The aim of this paper will be to show that the Easter Rebellion of 1916 was the crucial event in the history of modern Ireland, and that it profoundly shaped political relations with England for many years afterwards. The first chapter will consist of a synopsis of the proceedings leading up to the rising, and the naming of possible reasons for the rebellion. Following will be a recount of the happenings on that fateful Easter Monday and the four days after, including the results of the upheaval and the subsequent reactions of the British government. Lastly it will be dealt with the consequences of the Easter rebellion, and how it influenced the political proceedings in the years following 1916.

This book examines the political transformation and radicalisation of Ireland between the outbreak of the First World War, August 1914 and Sinn Fein's landslide electoral victory in December, 1918. It argues, through a novel application of theories of ethno-symbolism and social movement theory, that the myths, memories and symbols of the Irish nation formed the basis for interpretation of the events of the Easter Rising, and that this interpretation stimulated members of the Irish nation to support radical nationalism. The book calls this phenomenon the Cultural Trigger Point. Through an examination of a variety of sources, the book traces, in particular, the impact of the Great War on cultural and religious nationalism, and its role in the rise of radical Irish nationalism.

Remembering the Irish Revolution chronicles the ways in which the Irish revolution was remembered in the first two decades of Irish independence. While tales of heroism and martyrdom dominated popular accounts of the revolution, a handful of nationalists reflected on the period in more ambivalent terms. For them, the freedoms won in revolution came with great costs: the grievous loss of civilian lives, the brutalisation of Irish society, and the loss of hope for a united and prosperous independent nation. To many nationalists, their views on the revolution were traitorous. For others, they were the courageous expression of some uncomfortable truths. The Easter Rising, which mostly took place in Ireland's capital city, directly impacted on Dublin City Council. Some fighting occured in sites belonging to the council, including City Hall itself, while some employees of the council fought in the Rising; other employees were tasked with trying to deal with the aftermath. This collection of essays is the first detailed study to examine the impact of Dublin City Council on the 1916 Rising and in turn its effects on the council. It features an analysis of the political background in the elected council, which, although it included members from Labour and Sinn FÃ?Â?Ã?Â(c)in, also contained members from the Irish Party and unionists. It also includes a full list of council employees involved in the Easter Rising. Several elected members of Dublin City Council fought in 1916, including Councillor Richard O'Carroll, who fought with the Irish Volunteers at an outpost of Jacob's Factory. Two of the men executed after the Rising - Eamonn Ceannt and John MacBride - were council employees. Ceannt, also known as Edmund Kent, was a valued employee in the Rates Department, while Major MacBride was the city's Water-Bailiff. City Hall, the Corporation's premier building, was garrisoned on Easter Monday by the Irish Citizen Army under Captain Sean Connolly, who in civilian life was an official in the Motor Registration Department; his brother Joseph Connolly, a member of Dublin Fire Brigade, fought with Michael Mallin and Countess Markiewicz at the College of Surgeons.
