Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 6: 1839, July December On his return to Britain, in the early part of 1636, he pre sented himself at the court of Charles, where his reception was very different from what his personal merits and the services of his family entitled him to expect. A frigid act of courtesy, insultingly performed, was the only welcome with which the sel fish and haughty monarch received the youthful noble, who en dowed with all the accomplishments of his age, was burning to lay the unqualified offer of his services at the feet of his heredi tary sovereign. Mr. Napier, following Heylyn, endeavours to trace this injurious treatment to the crafty surmises of the Duke of Hamilton, at that time the King's bosom counsellor, in so far at least as Scotland was concerned, and from certain suspicions of his own seems inclined to hint, that nothing was wanting on the part of another Scotchman whom Charles had recently admitted into his councils, the young Lord of Lorn, afterwards Earl and Marquis of Argyle, to foster the prejudice thereby excited against one in whom both of these noblemen had reason to dread a formidable rival at court. The only objection to this theory is, that it has little beyond mere conjecture in its support, for it certainly serves to account for what otherwise must appear very extraordinary, the rejection by Charles of one whose illustrious descent, personal accomplishments, and hereditary principles seemed to point him out as a fit favorite for a prince to whom such qualifications were never indifferent; and there is nothing in the subsequent history of these noblemen in respect either of their public conduct, or of their behaviour towards Montrose, to cast any antecedent im probability on the supposition to which Mr. Napier resorts. Be this, however, as it may, the fact that Montrose was all but di rectly repulsed on the occasion of his first appearance at court, is unquestionable and as little can it be doubted that, on his return to Scotland, which took place immediately after, he carried with him the rankling soreness which, in a mind like his, such unwor thy treatment could not fail to produce. Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 20: July-December, 1846 Chester, the treatment suffered there, the longer journey to London, and the appearance at Bow Street, occupies no fewer than about thirty pages. But they are thoroughly readable; and, too, to be enjoyed, they must be read in full. No abridg ment could preserve, no description would convey, the racy freshness of the original itself. The same, too, may be said of the next fifty pages; containing, among countless matters of inferior but still pleasant interest, an account of several exami nations before the Privy Council, a description of the state prisoners' life in Cold Bath Fields' Prison, a brief summary of what befel his fellow-prisoners, and a very particular repetition of most marvellous tales imposed upon him by a stranger, George Plant, 'a great reader, a botanist, a dreary-minded wanderer in lonely dells, on moors and heaths, ' who for some time was imprisoned with him. Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 28: July-December, 1850 Connected with the deaneries and chapters of our cathedrals, there is an ancient set of libraries 'commonly called cathedral libraries. Of these there are thirz-four in England and six in Ireland. Their basis is theologic to some of them additions are annual] made; and attention is being given to their restora tion and improvement. Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 22: July-December, 1847 Or all the ministerial revolutions that ever occurred in England, there is none which, considered in its causes, in its circumstances, and in its probable consequences, has a better claim on the serious attention of politicians and moralists than the one we have recently witnessed. There is none which imparts more in structive or more important lessons to statesmen, to parties and their leaders, and to all classes of the people there is none which so forcibly illustrates the national progress in the science of social economy, and prognosticates, with more certainty, the approach ing triumph of truth over falsehood, of right over might, of national interests over the interests of castes or classes. Excerpt from The Eclectic Review, Vol. 10: July-December, 1855 To show from what motives books were sometimes writte these men, take the following. There is in the Nitrian lection a volume containing canons of early councils. The writer tells us, that in fulfilment of a vow to spend eight years in penance, be resolved to employ the time upon this book. He retired to the Desert, and in the year 4-9] began his work, which he finished in the year he was therefore ten years engaged upon this volume, which is one of much value. Some of the volumes in the Museum were the gift of private individuals for the good of their souls. They were brou vht from all quarters, from Syria and Palestine, and even from Biesomtamia.
