Education researchers worldwide face a basic question: Is their purpose to use people to develop knowledge, or use knowledge to develop people This book offers an exploration to this fundamental question by examining what three core disciplines – ecology, economics, and ecumenism – have in common. These disciplines have roots in the ancient Greek notion of the household (oikos). By examining some complementary and competing principles among the disciplines, the book uncovers some commonalities between science, economics and religion, that support a holistic view of ecology or ecological education. Ecology is the study of organisms and the way in which they interact with the environment. In a time where a lot of focus is placed upon the state of our environment and conservation, our gardens and local green spaces can be havens for a huge amount of diversity. In Heston, where I grew up, our garden and local fields have provided me with endless engagement and wonder. It's astounding the level of diversity that seemingly ignored areas of land harbour as well as the number of species that use and depend on our gardens. The present volume in the series focuses on homes, residences, and dwellings. Although many fields have had a long-standing interest in different aspects of home environments, the topic has recently come to the forefront in the interdisciplinary environment and behavior field. Researchers and theorists from many disciplines have begun to meet regularly, share ideas and perspectives, and move the investigation of psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of home environments to the central arena of environment and behavior studies. This volume representative-though not comprehensive attempts to provide a sampling of contemporary perspectives on the study of home environments. As in previous volumes, the authors are drawn from a variety of disciplines, including environmental design fields of architecture and planning, and from the social science fields of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history. This diversity of authors and perspectives makes salient the principle that the study of homes in relation to behav ior requires the contributions of many disciplines.
