The Midwest Book Review Despite its great importance, there are surprisingly few economic studies of the impact of climate on agriculture and how agriculture can adapt under a variety of conditions. This book examines 22 countries across four continents, including both developed and developing economies. It provides both a good analytical basis for additional work and solid results for policy debate concerning income distributional effects such as abatement, adaptation, and equity. Agriculture and grazing are a central sector in the livelihood of many people, particularly in developing countries. This book uses the Ricardian method to examine the impact of climate change on agriculture. It also quantifies how farmers adapt to climate. The findings suggest that agriculture in developing countries is more sensitive to climate than agriculture in developed countries. Rain-fed cropland is generally more sensitive to warming than irrigated cropland and cropland is more sensitive than livestock. The adaptation to climate change results reveal that farmers make many adjustments including switching crops and livestock species, adopting irrigation, and moving between livestock and crops. The results also reveal that impacts and adaptations vary a great deal across landscapes, suggesting that adaptation policies must be location specific. Finally, the book suggests a research agenda for the future. Economists in academia and the public sector, policy analysts and development agencies will find this broad study illuminating.

In this paper, I analyze the economic impacts of climate change on agriculture as well as the adaptation possibilities of farmers. In my first chapter, I estimate the impact of climate change on agricultural land values using a variety of methods and forecast models. First, I combine a framework that incorporates different possible forecasts of future climate with degree days, a temperature measure that allows to capture the effects of extreme temperatures. I use this framework to estimate the damages of climate change relative to a constant 2002 climate. Second, I exploit climate variation over time between 1978 and 2002 within counties to estimate a land value regression. Using this variation, I can address the time-invariant omitted-variable bias of a cross-sectional regression. Furthermore, I estimate the impacts using a range of climate models. The present discounted damages range from $22 to $204 billion in 2002 dollars, with a mean of $67 billion dollars using a discount rate of 5 percent. In the models that use climate variation within counties over time, I find that estimated damages are on average $64 billion larger than the cross-sectional regressions. Furthermore, the choice of climate model has significant economic importance as the estimates across climate models vary by about $160 billion for nearly all specifications. Finally, I document substantial heterogeneity in impacts across counties. In the second chapter, Michael Greenstone, Ishan Nath, and I investigate how much farmers can adapt to climate change through their choice of crops. By combining a discrete choice framework with data on insurance costs for farmers, we estimate the impact of predicted changes in climate on farmer profits relative to other uses of land. In all specifications, climate change will produce a severe reduction in the share of land used to grow corn and soybeans in the US by the middle of the century. Farmers who grow corn would gain between 1.4 and 2.5 cents for an additional growing degree day relative to the outside option. On the other hand, farmers would lose between 17.9 and 32.3 cents from an increase in an additional growing degree days above 29° C. We find similar results for soybeans. These results are robust across census years and choice sets. When farmers are allowed to re-optimize their land use, climate damages in 2050 are $8.9 to $11.8 billion lower compared to a scenario where their crop choice in 2002 is held constant.

Effects of Climate Change and Viarability on the Agricultural Production Systems provides an integrated assessment of global climate change's impact on agriculture at the farm level, in the context of farm level adaptation decisions. Ten agricultural areas in the Upper Midwest region - the heart of the United States' corn belt - were subjected to climate change and changing climate variability scenarios through simulations of future climate using results from general circulation models. Crop growth models, calibrated to the study sites, were used to simulate yields under varying climate conditions. Today, the entire world is suffering from global warming and its consequent, climate change. This has emerged as the most prominent global environmental issue and there is an urgent need to mitigate its impact on agriculture. Over the past 20 years South Asia has had a robust economic growth, yet it is home to more than one fourth of the world’s hunger and 40% of the world’s malnourished children and women. Persistent climatic variability, which results in frequent drought and flood, is among the major reasons for this phenomenon. Vegetables are in general more succulent (have 90% water) and more sensitive to climatic vagaries and sudden changes in temperature, as well as irregular precipitation at any phase of crop growing, can affect the normal growth, flowering, pollination, fruit setting, fruit development and fruit ripening which eventually decreases the yield. The irregular precipitation also causes the soil salinity and is a major challenge in many vegetable growing areas. To mitigate the harmful impact of climatic change there is an urgent need to develop adequate adaptation strategies for adverse effect of climate change and preference should be given to the development of heat, cold, drought, flood and salinity stress tolerant genotypes along with climate proofing through conventional and non-conventional breeding techniques, as well as exploiting the beneficial effects of CO2 enhancement on crop growth and yield. Available evidence shows that there is high probability of increase in the frequency and intensity of climate related natural hazards due to climate change and hence increase the potential threat due to climate change related natural disasters in the world. At present protected cultivation and grafted seedlings are also popularizing among vegetable growers because of the huge scope as well as, molecular breeding, emerging insect-pests & diseases and postharvest quality of vegetables under this climate change scenario. Moreover, underexploited vegetables, perennial vegetable and tuber crops have a more tolerant ability to climate vagaries compare to major vegetables which are also discussed in this book.
