Excerpt from The Economics of Commerce The following chapters first appeared in the form of a series of papers on The Political Economy of Business in a magazine circulating chiefly among commercial men. They were intended for young men engaged in, or just about to enter, commercial life; and aimed at presenting, in a simple, popular, and elementary manner, the main economic principles which underlie modern commerce. They are now republished (by request), and it is hoped that they may be of use to others than those for whom they were originally. Intended. Suggestions for further. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Commerce To the tools of the teacher in economics Mr. Clow now adds this book on Commerce. It must be tested, like every new tool, by actual use. That it has not been constructed Without some careful experiment ing is shown by What the author says of its trial in the school With Which he is connected and thus it rests already on a considerable experience. But it is also constructed on sound principles. Two funda mental principles of teaching - that the pupil shall first observe and understand the things With Which he is brought in contact by familiar experience, and shall proceed thence to the study of things unfamil iar; and that he shall be trained to'observe, to do, and to think for himself - these Mr. C10w has had steadily in mind. Hence his book is not so much a text-book as a manual of directions, an aid and a guide for teachers and pupils. As such it assumes that the instruction Will be given by a capable teacher, well trained in this particular branch of knowledge; and it calls for careful watching and judicious guidance of pupils. Rightly used, it may be expected to prove stimulating and profitable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Sydney John Chapman and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-02 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from Political Economy Political eoonomy is, and has been for some years, in a transitional state, which is proof of its vitality. On the one side it is becoming more abstract, and on the other side it is becoming more realistic. The two movements are not in the least Opposed, unless in the sense that they act and react on each other incessantly to the great advance ment of the study. Much modern Economic science is being increasingly assimilated in form and method to the Natural sciences. In chemical and physical labora tories which can pretend to any distinction realistic researching never stops; but speculation as regards the fundamentals of chemistry and physics continue and must continue. In the great laboratory of the world a multitude of realistic researches remain to be made by economists, and it is only as they are made that the science Of economics will develop satisfactorily; but to attack the ultra-abstract and mathematical economists on that account, in the supposed interests of realism, is suicidal. Of this book Speculative results of a very general kind are the substance. I have to thank Mr. A. Fingland Jack, Lecturer on Economics and Commerce in the University of Manchester for his kind assistance with the proofs.
