The main outlines of this theory have been tested during many years in lectures at Cambridge, and more recently at Bristol. Excerpt from Credit, Industry, and the War It is hoped that this book may prove to be the foreword to an effort to help in the solution of some of the economic problems which either are, or soon will be, pressing upon the attention of this country. The discussions arranged by the Economics Section of the British Association at Manchester aroused considerable interest, and there was a widespread demand that they should be available to a more extensive public than could attend the meetings. Under the circumstances immediate publication was deemed to be essential. Thus, although the Reports were interim, and the discussion on Industrial Harmony, not only as incomplete as such discussions must necessarily be, but also somewhat inconclusive, being preliminary, and the views expressed being by no means identical, it was decided to publish with as little delay as possible. My work as Editor has been considerably lessened owing to the invariable helpfulness and promptitude of the several contributors. Especially am I indebted to Professor Scott and Mr. Egbert Jackson for assistance in preparing the matter for press. I would take this opportunity to thank very sincerely the permanent officials of the Association for their exceeding kindness in assisting, not only in the publication of this book, but on many occasions in my work as Recorder during the present year. Each contributor is solely responsible for his own facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Economics of Anarchy: A Study of the Industrial Type All sociologists claim that progress has consisted in departure from com pulsory to voluntary cc-operation; from the reign of militant measures to what is termed the industrial type, Wherein self-reliance and free cc-operation directs; from the inequalities of privileged and restricted classes to the equality of equal freedom to natural opportunities; in short, to use the concise statement of Herbert Spencer, from a regime of status to a regime of contract. In the social order militancy and industrialism, therefore, represent past and future types; the first wherein war is the normal direction of human activity; the other where peace must prevail for healthful development. Following this guiding principle let us endeavor to group the salient points of progress from militant rule to industrial requirements in order to see more clearly not only in what direction we are tending, but also what methods are not conducive to that end. Starting with the fact that social evolution is chiefly characterized by a transition from warlike to peaceful pursuits, that from generation to genera tion activity has been turning from conquest over fellowmen to conquest over nature for men, we see at once that methods characterizing an outgrown phase of life are inappropriate to the end toward which progress has been made. Excerpt from Economics of the Silk Industry: A Study in Industrial Organisation The investigation on which this book is based was commenced in 1916. It is the result of personal observation and inquiry extending over a period of nearly three years, both in this country and in France. In Great Britain I devoted exclusive attention to the study of the manufacturing industry, and collected useful material from all sources, including merchants, brokers, manufacturers, and others interested in the silk industry and trade. During my tour in France I took the opportunity of making a joint economic survey of the silk producing and the silk-manufacturing industries. This joint study greatly facilitated my work, and I was thus able to discover the connecting links between the processes of production and the processes of manufacturing.
