This book examines how migrant remittances contribute to household social resilience in rural Bangladesh. Using a mixed methods approach, the authors show that remittances play a crucial role in enhancing the life chances and economic livelihoods of rural households, and that remittance income enables households to overcome immediate pressures, adapt to economic and environmental change, build economic and cultural capital, and provide greater certainty in planning for the future. However, the book also reveals that the social and economic benefits of remittances are not experienced equally by all households. Rural village households endure a precarious existence and the potentially positive outcomes of remittances can easily be undermined by a range of external and household-specific factors leading to few, if any, benefits in terms of household social resilience.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the possible changes in remittance-sending behavior and potential avenues to alleviate a probable decline in remittance flows became concerns. This book brings together a wide array of studies from around the world focusing on the recent trends in remittance flows. The authors have gathered a select group of researchers from academic, practitioner and policy making bodies. Thus the book can be seen as a conversation between the different stakeholders involved in or affected by remittance flows globally. The book is a first-of-its-kind attempt to analyze the effects of an ongoing crisis on remittance flows globally. Data analyzed by the book reveals three trends. First, The more diversified the destinations and the labour markets for migrants the more resilient are the remittances sent by migrants. Second, the lower the barriers to labor mobility, the stronger the link between remittances and economic cycles in that corridor. And third, as remittances proved to be relatively resilient in comparison to private capital flows, many remittance-dependent countries became even more dependent on remittance inflows for meeting external financing needs. There are several reasons for migration and remittances to be relatively resilient to the crisis. First, remittances are sent by the stock (cumulative flows) of migrants, not only by the recent arrivals (in fact, recent arrivals often do not remit as regularly as they must establish themselves in their new homes). Second, contrary to expectations, return migration did not take place as expected even as the financial crisis reduced employment opportunities in the US and Europe. Third, in addition to the persistence of migrant stocks that lent persistence to remittance flows, existing migrants often absorbed income shocks and continued to send money home. Fourth, if some migrants did return or had the intention to return, they tended to take their savings back to their country of origin. Finally, exchange rate movements during the crisis caused unexpected changes in remittance behavior: as local currencies of many remittance recipient countries depreciated sharply against the US dollar, they produced a “sale” effect on remittance behavior of migrants in the US and other destination countries.

Migration within and beyond the territory that now constitutes Bangladesh has historically been an important livelihood strategy for many of its people. Existing studies on migration and remittances in Bangladesh provide little insight on remittances from the perspective of migrant households and how migrant households use of this source of income. This study adopts a micro-social analysis of thirty six migrant households in three selected villages in Bangladesh to examine the contribution of remittances to migrant households. The ethnographic methodology used in this study aims to better understand the role of remittances at the level of the household. The study found that remittances do not occur in a social vacuum and are part of more complex phenomena of migration and labour. The inward remittances play an important role in providing new opportunities for migrant households and contribute to the resilience of migrant households as well as villages. The interviews with householders reveal that remittances make an important contribution to improving the economic circumstances of migrant households by contributing to their expenditure allocations, income diversification and spreading risk more generally. The study reveals that in the absence of formal or informal markets for credit, insurance and/or commodity exchanges, remittances respond to households' demands for financial resources. Remittances contribute to improving the life chances of individuals and households; they improve living standards by funding household expenditure on food, clothing, consumer goods, housing and the education of family members. The research data for this study depicts a more complex picture of remittances than has been presented by previous research and this in turn leads us to embrace a more cautious interpretation of the benefits of remittances. The study reveals that the social and economic benefits of remittances are not equally celebrated by all migrant households as one would anticipate; the poorest of the poor continue in their struggles for livelihood. However, even those who have benefitted least from migrant remittances recognise the importance of this source of income in transforming the social fortunes by enabling households to endure and overcome immediate pressures, respond to challenges as they arise and plan for the future. The study makes an important contribution in drawing attention to the concept of 'social resilience' as a theoretical tool for understanding and explaining the impacts of remittances on households.

The interrelationship between migration and household education, depending on certain socioeconomic circumstances, is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon. Migration contributes to the household education through both social and economic remittances. Moreover, the circumstances like urban and rural set up may also have an influence on educational attainment of the households because both have different educational infrastructures. Likewise, from a better destination, people can bring economic and social remittances that can have an influence on education. Hence, the migration-education relationship is more multifaceted than the migration-wellbeing relationship. It is, therefore, difficult to draw a straightforward conclusion about the link between migration and education without assessing other decisive factors, e.g. social and economic remittances. Under the aforesaid circumstances, this study aims at understanding the implications of remittances on household education from a holistic perspective, therefore, divided into two separate parts, the quantitative and the qualitative one. I used the Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2010 dataset of Bangladesh for the quantitative analysis by focusing on the economic remittances, where the outcome variables are, the per capita education expenditure and the average years of schooling. To examine the implication of economic remittances, a comparison is drawn between the households having a migrant member and households having no migrant member. I introduced a distinction between international and internal migration, and also investigated if the type of migration (i.e. internal or international) matters for the effect of migration on education outcomes. The study found that households having a migrant member invest more in the household education compared to the households having no migrant member. Furthermore, this study explores the role of educational infrastructure on the household education outcome. By investing more in childrens education, the households are trying to build a human capital that can help diversifying the risks and secure the future household income. The outcome of this study supports the livelihood theory (Ellis, 1998) and the New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM) theory (Stark, 1991). In addition to economic remittances, I have addressed the effects of social remittances, including attitude, knowledge and skills, learned by the migrants from the host countries on childrens education. To do so, I have interviewed the returnees from Malaysia and the Middle East comprehensively. The findings indicate that the social remittances have influences on childrens education and these findings support the theory of social remittances by Levitt (1998). This study attempts to address the role of social and economic remittances on education, from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives, complementing each other. But the quantitative and qualitative parts of the analysis are not used for triangulation purpose. Hence, this study is expected to contribute to the existing literature on the migration-education nexus
