This title covers the major drivers of the Latin American region’s economy, including exports of agricultural products, petroleum and minerals, and manufactured goods, along with the service and tourism industries. Despite recent improvements, the Latin American economy remains dependent on commodity exports to the West, presenting a challenge to the region’s long-term future. When used in the classroom, this resource provides readers with the tools they need to analyze concepts in economics and how they affect the countries of Latin America.

While Latin America accounts for approximately 7 percent of the world economy, easily accessible information on the economies of the region is not always easy to find. The existing literature on Latin American economics usually assumes some previous familiarity with the region and is focused on government policy choices. The Economies of Latin America is a book for the general reader needing a quick introduction to the economics of the region. The book is composed of three parts: the first explains Latin America’s economic history and a description of the central economic challenges of the region. The second offers country-specific details. The final part deals with the economic future of the region where the authors put forth a Latin American version of success. This book is a useful, in-depth introduction for students of Latin American economics as well as the general reader.

The economic backwardness of Latin America and the Caribbean has long been discussed, but seldom been the subject of such a wide-ranging quantitative study. The twelve essays in this collection present a twenty-first-century analysis of a long-term issue, providing extensive geographical coverage and allowing reinterpretations of the past.

Latin America is attracting increasing interest due to the strong economic performance of the last decade and to the political changes that are taking place. This book gives a unique, comprehensive, and up to date view of Latin America economic development over the two centuries since Independence. It considers Latin American economies within the wider context of the international economy, and covers economic growth, international trade, capital flows, and trends in inequality and human development. With chapters that cover different eras, it traces the major developments of Latin American countries and offers a novel and coherent interpretation of the economic history of the region. It combines a wealth of original research, new perspectives, and empirical information to provide a synthesis of the growing literature that both complements and extends previous studies.

This annual publication examines the economic performance of the Latin American and Caribbean region as a whole, and of individual countries, for the year 2005 as well as assessing the outlook for 2006. The regional economy grew for a third consecutive year in 2005 with an estimated GDP growth of 4.3 per cent, with a projected GDP growth rate in 2006 of 4.1 per cent. Per capita GDP is estimated to have risen by about 3 per cent, the unemployment rate fell from 10.3 per cent in 2004 to 9.3 per cent in 2005 and poverty indices showed a decrease. But the region is growing at lower rates than developing countries as a whole (5.7 per cent GDP growth in the period 2003-2006). Latin American and Caribbean sub-regions show distinctive behaviours: the Southern Cone (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay) and the Andean Community countries and, to a certain extent the Caribbean, registered higher growth than Mexico and Central America.
