Excerpt from China England But while this gloomy picture of the state of affairs might have been partly true of China in the time past, it is no longer true now. The sick man is rapidly convalescent, the sleeping lion is awake, and the hoary and tottery empire has had new blood injected into her system. China is moving and she is moving with a rapidity difficult for one who has not personally witnessed the wonderful changes to understand and realise. Repeated defeats at the hands of the foreign Powers soon convinced our people of the futility of matching bows and arrows against modern guns and explosives, whilst our wooden junks went down before the onslaught of armoured cruisers and battleships like wheat before the scythe. For several years there was loud and threatening talk of doing violence to the integrity of the empire, and one actually appeared under the ominous work and unfortunate title of "The break-up of China." No sooner did books and newspapers containing discussions of this subject appear than they were translated into our language, and the wild rumours of impending violence filled the minds of the people with indignation and alarm, impelling them at, one may say, the point of the bayonet to devise ways and means whereby national danger might be averted. Proofs of incidents were not lacking to warn our people that all were not brothers within four seas. The rising of the 20th century ushered in the New China, beaming and teeming in the prime of its vigour, though sometimes tempered by the over-enthusiasm of its juvenile spirit. As we know that we are in need of new knowledge badly, batches of young men have been sent abroad for such scientific education. Many of them devoted a large part of their time to the editing of magazines and the translation of books, a veritable flood of literature thus pouring back to their fatherland, and reaching every nook and corner of the empire. Excerpt from Notable Women of Modern China I have therefore told the stories of the women concerning whose work I have been able to Obtain definite information, belie'ving that they fairly represent the educated women of China who, wherever their education has been received, and in whatever sphere it is being used, are ably and bravely playing an important part in the moulding of the great new China. For much of the material for these sketches I am indebted to friends of the women of whom I have written. To all such my hearty thanks are due. For personal reminiscences, letters, and photographs, I am most grateful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Instruction for Chinese Women and Girls How little is known, save by a very few, of her reverence for parents, age, letters, and law; of her teachers, schools, colleges, literary Chancellors and degrees; and that it is true in that great empire that the humblest may rise to be second only to the emperor if he has the ability. A literary aristocracy leads all others; indeed, leaves no place for any other, and it is far more to have a literary degree than to be a millionaire. Twice six hundred years has China's famed Hanlin Academy existed and been the Mecca ofher aspiring scholars. Of what other countries can we find reliable dynastic histories of thousands of years, books on morals and etiquette, visiting cards, en velopes, tinted and decorated note paper, the very tint of the paper conveying sen timents of regard, and these not modern luxuries, but ancient, and in common use when our ancestors were such gross bar barians as no record proves the Chinese to have ever been? The better I know this wonderful people, and the more I study their history, the greater my aston ishment that such a Civilization can exist parallel with such degradation and super stition of the masses. This is doubtless due to the exception ally wise and good men they have had as teachers, notably Confucius and Mencius, whose instructions concerning all the re lations of man to man are known and quoted from the highest down to the poorest Classes. Excerpt from Two Girls in China The material for this book was obtained by the writer during some months of travel in China in 1899-1900, pre ceding the Boxer rebellion and the disorganization of the Imperial Government. Peking'and the adjacent provinces were visited, and the utmost pains taken to observe and record such facts as might prove interesting to young read ers, such as the geographical features of the country, its products, the occupations and customs of the people, etc. Almost three months were spent in the capital; and from this point journeys were made to the Ming Tombs, the Nan K'ou Pass, and across Pechili almost to the Mongolian frontier. In the latter expedition the writer was accom panied by a missionary, an American lady who spoke Chinese uently, and through whose assistance, as interpreter, an insight into national characteristics was Obtained which would not have been otherwise practicable. In addition to this, the story of the Great Bell is con densed from the version given by Lafcadio Hearn in Some Chinese Ghosts, a delightful book, now, unfortunately, out of print.
