This study aimed to investigate the effects of familiarity with the American culture on reading comprehension among middle school English language learners (ELL) in a North Dakota school. Because ELL students are in the process of learning about the American culture at the same time as they learn the English language, this study investigated whether familiarity with the American culture could impact their reading comprehension. Random selection techniques were used to select three equal groups of 6th-8th graders academically leveled: beginning, intermediate, or advanced. Students were 11-14 year-old males and females from Somalia, Iraq, China, Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, and Nepal. Groups of ten were randomly assigned to texts containing culturally-related content developed and written at appropriate reading levels. The study indicated a need for cultural study for ELL students in the curriculum. Other participants included five ELL teachers to explore whether content on American culture was explicitly taught through their lessons. Teachers indicated they did not incorporate culture adequately into their curriculum. Data collection procedures included surveys, pre-tests, and post-tests for students familiar or unfamiliar with the American culture. All the tests were formatted in a standard manner.

The present research attempts to examine the effects of the foreign culture introduced in the reading materials on learners' reading comprehension, and the way culture is actually dealt with foreign language classes in the Secondary School level. Throughout the study, we tend to explore teachers' as well as students perspectives and opinions towards the issue under investigation through diagnosing test contain two texts which involve foreign cultural clues to the students from second year textbook, and designing teachers questionnaire. In other words, this study focuses on whether reading materials incorporating foreign cultural clues facilitate learners' reading comprehension. In addition, the teachers' cultural knowledge, methods techniques, activities, materials currently used to teach and integrate culture into English foreign classes. The results show that texts include foreign cultural clues hinder the process of reading comprehension. Likewise, the results of teachers' questionnaire confirm the idea of reading materials incorporate foreign culture type hinders learners reading comprehension. Moreover, language and culture are closely related and the unavailability of resources and materials which might have helped teachers to introduce the target culture in their classes. On the basis of this findings, a set of recommendations for both students and teachers in order to offer useful ways of reaching culture in English foreign classes.

In this study the role of cultural schema in secondary English learners' reading comprehension of a period-specific text was observed and measured through multiplechoice and fill-in testing. Spanish speaking English learners at the high school level, who were either born in the United States or Mexico, with varying levels of English language proficiency, were the focus of this study. Upon conclusion of the study, English learners born in the United States and with higher language proficiency levels had the highest comprehension scores. The group read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet while the teacher used targeted instruction to construct cultural schema needed to comprehend the text. All groups improved their comprehension with the introduction of targeted instruction of cultural schema. However, the only statistical significance was found in the analysis of language proficiency and reading comprehension. These findings suggested that English learners' reading comprehension is affected by language proficiency, but further research is needed to understand the connection between cultural schema and reading comprehension.
