Many students receiving special education services are identified with a learning disability. These students learn best in ways that utilize their strengths and that provide compensatory strategies for learning success despite processing deficits. This case study examined whether Reuven Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment intervention, the Organization of Dots, affected the overall performance of a middle school student at a Title 1 school. The subject receives special education services in the Special Day Class setting. She qualified for these services due to a severe auditory processing deficit and low academic performance, which is not commensurate with her average cognitive ability. The results, obtained from standard score comparisons between previous and most recent triennial Individualized Education Program assessments on the nine basic achievement tests of the Woodcock Johnson III, showed an increase in most academic areas. Additional research with a larger population is needed to support these findings.

The Routledge International Handbook of Research on Teaching Thinking is a comprehensive guide to research on teaching thinking. Teaching thinking is key to growing a more successful economy, is needed for increased democratic engagement and is vital for the well-being of individuals faced with the complexity of a globalised world. However, there are questions about what we mean by ‘thinking’, how best to teach it and how best to assess it, and it is these questions that this handbook explores and addresses. Containing surveys and summaries of international, cutting-edge research on every aspect of teaching thinking in a range of contexts, the handbook is thorough in its delivery, examining many different approaches and methods to help readers understand what teaching thinking is and how we can best take this movement forward. Key topics include: • Theoretical perspectives on teaching thinking • Approaches for teaching thinking • Developing creative thinking • Developing critical thinking and metacognition • The assessment of thinking • Teaching thinking in the context of STEM • Collaborative thinking and new technology • Neuro-educational research on teaching thinking This book is an essential guide for policy-makers, teachers and researchers who are interested in teaching thinking

Historically, children with learning disabilities have struggled with the expected level o f academic rigor at the pre-primary level, resulting in poor academic achievement than their non-disabled peers. In the last few years the special education system has taken another turn especially with the concept o f considering students with learning disability as students with special needs. The students have average or above average IQ and intelligence, but have difficulty to cope up with their academic skills. Proper academic support will help the students to deal with their difficulties. However our current education system is not adequately supportive to deal with this situation. Traditionally, children with learning problems have been mainstreamed into general education classes and those with serious problems have been ignored by the school authorities and later on many o f these children end up as drop outs. Between 1986 and 1999, the numbers o f students with learning disabilities were educated through regular class rooms and this showed an increase of 20 percent (National centre for educational statistics, 1999). The class teachers were not equipped and trained to handle these cases, and this was a serious concern and therefore has become mandatory to prioritize and meet the needs o f LD students in a satisfying maimer by offering the right supportive system to upgrade their potential.
