This volume presents chapters by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers who study the impact of classroom portfolios in the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. The focus throughout the volume is on the tension between classroom assessment and externally mandated testing. It presents the efforts of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to understand the impact of classroom portfolios for the assessment of writing achievement by elementary and middle grade students. Under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Writing, the editors conducted a national survey of exemplary portfolio projects, arranged for a series of "video visits," and held several working conferences. The result of this work is a broad-ranging tale: the aspirations of teachers and administrators to move the machinery of schooling in the direction of more authentic and engaging tasks, the puzzlement of students when they realize that the assignments are real and that the teacher may not have a "right answer" in mind, and the tensions between ivory-tower ideas and everyday classroom practice. Divided into four sections, this research volume: * provides a historical perspective, develops the conceptual framework that serves as a background for many activities described throughout, and discusses numerous practical issues that confront today's researchers and practitioners; * views the phenomenon of writing portfolios through a variety of broadview lenses such as teacher enthusiasm, student reflection, assessment tension, the portfolio as metaphor, and the locus of control; * conveys important conceptual issues with a balance toward pragmatics; and * offers unique insights from the perspective of one individual who serves as scholar, researcher, and teacher.

Using Digital Portfolios To Develop Students Writing written by Ricky Lam and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-07 with Education categories.

This book equips pre-service teachers, research postgraduate students, teacher educators, and language specialists with specific knowledge and skills about the principles, research, and applications of digital portfolios within the EFL writing contexts. While most digital portfolio scholarship focuses on higher education, this book targets primary-level and secondary-level school audiences, namely pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and Ministry of Education staff members with a focus on EFL writing. The rationale behind this design is that the published literature on digital portfolios tends to be generic and one-size-fits-all; there has been scant published scholarship about the development of digital portfolio literacy among teachers and pupils, which could enable them to upgrade the teaching and learning of writing in a larger EFL environment. This volume fills this gap by illustrating the why, what, and how aspects of digital portfolios in ten reader-friendly chapters. Guiding educators to enrich their pedagogical repertoire via the portfolio approach, this book emphasises a healthy balance between principles, research, and practice. It is an easy-to-follow guide to setting up digital portfolio systems and coaching pupils to improve writing, ensuring the dissemination of digital portfolios with high fidelity.

This book brings together multiple theoretical perspectives and disciplinary approaches to study the acquisition and development of written language by children as well as the implications for teaching and learning of writing practices in a variety of languages and cultural contexts. Chapters in this contributed volume present both theoretical contributions and results of research carried out with students and teachers from 11 countries (Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, UK and USA) who speak seven different languages: Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian, French, Dutch and Hebrew. By bringing together research developed in diverse cultural contexts it enriches the debates in the interdisciplinary field of writing studies by analyzing a wide range of topics at the interface between research and educational implications for the teaching and learning of writing by children. The book consists of five parts, each one addressing a specific set of topics. Part I presents studies on topics related to written language representation systems (phonological and morphological awareness) and on the relationship between grammar and the quality of texts of different genres. Part II includes studies related to compositional processes of writing texts, and the factors involved in these processes. Part III focuses on the difficulties faced by students during the acquisition and development of writing. Part IV is dedicated to chapters that discuss and compare writing practices in different social environments. Finally, chapters in part V deal with teaching and learning of writing in the school setting. Development of Writing Skills in Children in Diverse Cultural Contexts: Contributions to Teaching and Learning will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of psychology, education and linguistics, as well as to other social scientists in the broader interdisciplinary field of writing studies.

The European Language Portfolio aims to foster the development of learner autonomy, intercultural awareness and plurilingualism. Teachers of particular languages working on their own can use the ELP to promote learner autonomy, but the goals of intercultural awareness and plurilingualism invite us to use the ELP in all foreign language classes at all levels in the school. The guide introduces the language education policy that underpins the ELP, explores the key concepts that it embodies, and explains how to plan, implement and evaluate whole-school ELP projects. The ten case studies published on the project website illustrate various dimensions of ELP use and include practical suggestions and activities for teachers and learners.

This book offers an approach for using portfolios with elementary level students and shows how the portfolio process can serve as a powerful motivational tool by encouraging students to assess their own work, set goals, and take responsibility for future learning. Throughout the book, there are stories that illuminate the lessons learned by students, teachers, and the principal at a school in Winnetka, Illinois, that has used portfolios for more than a decade. The 11 lessons provide vignettes of school life: (1) "Children Can Assess Their Own Learning"; (2) "Children Learn All the Time"; (3) "Teachers Learn All the Time, Too"; (4) "Getting Clear on Portfolio Purpose, Ownership, and Content"; (5) "Portfolios Encourage Children to Think about Their Learning"; (6) "Portfolios Respond to the Individual Needs of Students"; (7) "Designating a Space and Place for Gathering Memories"; (8) "A Celebration Connects Child, Portfolio, and Audience"; (9) "Teaching Parents How to Be Part of the Portfolio Conference"; (10) "Listening for Children's Meaning"; and (11) "Creating a Language for Portfolios." An appendix presents the philosophy of the Winnetka, Illinois, public schools. (Contains 68 references.) (SM)
