The overall objective of the program is to enhance the effectiveness of turbine cooling by exploiting the presence and structures of vortices. Program A is concerned with jet impingement cooling and addresses the effects of bulk fluid rotation on jets, their vortical structures and cooling. A low-speed rotating water tunnel has been constructed for flow-visualization study of impinging jets in rotation: in addition, a rotating air rig was also constructed. The results show that the Contour of the impinging jet is crucial in determining the jet trajectory and both the favorable and adverse effects of rotation have been identified in the context of impingement cooling. Program B is concerned with convective and film-cooling. It focuses upon the so-called tornado effect, or the corewise transport of heat through the legs of hairpin vortices, which could lead to enhanced cooling in turbulent flows. An explicit confirmation of the effect have been established by ain water and unsteady heat transfer measurements in air. (AN).

A new equation is derived for the motion of vorticity in a general fluid, including the effects of viscosity, compressibility, nonhomogeneity, and nonconservative forces. The equation holds, in particular, for vortices which may not move with the fluid. A linearized form of this equation is applied to tornado cyclones and to the twin tornado of April 11, 1965, near Elkhart, Indiana. It is shown that the displacement of tornado cyclones to the right of the mean tropospheric winds may be accounted for by the upward efflux of fluid from the cyclone into the jet stream. Also, the retarded revolution rate of the twin tornado may be due in part to an attractive "buoyancy" force acting on the partially rarefied cores of the pair.

Effects of embedded longitudinal vortices on heat transfer in a turbulent boundary layer film cooled from a single injections hole are discussed. Film coolant was injected at blowing ratios 0.50 to 1.50 at a freestream velocity of 10 m/s. A single longitudinal vortex was induced upstream of the film-cooling holes. Heat transfer measurement were made downstream of injection. Flow visualization tests were conducted after the injectant was contaminated with smoke. Surveys of mean velocity and mean temperature were also made in different spanwise normal planes. For all blowing ratios examined, the embedded vortices cause significant alterations to wall heat transfer and to film-cooling distributions.
