Marital relations and family structure have evolved over the years. Transformations in marriage, divorce, and cohabitation have altered family life in many parts of the world including the United States. Single-parent families are on the rise. Social scientists are concerned with the diminishing role of family and imminent decline in parental involvement in child's education. This demands a closer look into the effects of parental marital relationships on parents' involvement and children's literacy outcomes. The current study examined the connections between parental marital status, parental involvement, and literacy outcomes of kindergarten children by using the nationally representative, Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies Kindergarten Class of 20100́311 dataset. The results showed that the reading scores of the children living in intact families with two parents were statistically significantly higher than their peers living with single parents and other guardians after taking demographics including age, gender, race/ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and location of schools into account. The demographic characteristics of children had differential impact on the association between parental marital status and children's reading scores. The results also indicated that parental involvement statistically significantly mediated the association between parent marital status and children's reading scores. However, the study posed a challenge on the common belief that two parents are always better for children's literacy outcomes, finding that single parents had enhanced parental involvement compared to. This suggests that the association between family structure and children's outcomes could not be considered in isolation from demographic variables. The importance of the study lies in its contribution to inform the policy and practice of the nuances of family relation and its complex interplays with demographics and children's outcomes that would help the educators to devise suitable interventions to address the needs of children from diverse families.

Parents who divorce may be less likely to invest in their children while together or they may divorce to shield their children from the effects of marital conflict. I study the relationship between children's achievement and the marital status of their parents within a dynamic framework in which partners decide on whether to remain married, how to interact (with or without conflict), and child investments. I then assess whether a child whose parents divorced would have been better off had divorce not occurred.

It has long been accepted that the social and economic well-being of adults is determined principally by their passage through childhood and that well-adjusted children emerge most often from healthy families. Creating the stability, emotional warmth and security of a healthy family environment is a challenge to parents at the best of times, but to do so in the current situation of family disruption and reconstitution is even more so. With parents separating more often, and earlier in their children's lives, family life experiences are likely to become increasingly diverse. Too much research has attempted to understand the impact of family change on child development without first properly defining the relevant aspects of family history. The National Longitudinal Survey on Children and Youth (NLSCY) provides a unique opportunity for improving the definition of the family life course. Detailed data on the children's family history, including the conjugal and parental life of both parents before the child's birth and, where applicable, after separation, permit a detailed classification of family trajectories. Combining this with information on the child's emotional and intellectual development should provide a potent tool to explore which life experiences are more or less propitious for the different aspects of child development. In this study, we explore how different elements of parents' and children's family life course interact, focusing particularly on the relationship between the parents' conjugal and parental behaviour before the union in which the target child was born, and after the child's birth. More specifically, we analyse the impact of a number of elements related to the context at birth, such as the rank and type of the parents' union, and whether or not they have children from an earlier union, on the likelihood that parents separate. Based on the results of these analyses, we define a series of summary family history variables that can be incorporated into analyses of child outcomes. A bibliography is included. Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

In Qur experience, there is bias and inconsistency in much of what is written about the effects of divorce on offspring. When interested students have asked for appropriate resources, we have been hard-pressed to respond without providing a long list of contradictory sources. Much of what is currently available reflects the cultural bias that parental divorce is one of the worst things that can happen to offspring. This book has grown out of our desire to provide a comprehensive, accessible, balanced, and readable resource for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the effects of divorce upon offspring. We also hope that it will be useful to parents and practicing professionals who are not familiar with the empirical literature addressing this situation. Our primary goal is to evaluate and summarize the empirical literature in this field. However, we illustrate important points with examples drawn from autobiographies completed as part of a class assignment or from client histories based on one of the author's (KNB) counseling with families who are experiencing separation and divorce. We have selected life stories that describe problems in order to show possible results and that even difficult situations can have a positive resolution. Although the individuals involved may recognize themselves, there is insufficient information for anyone else to make an identification.

Single parenting has found little, if any, acceptance in most communities in Kenya, which may adversely affect self-esteem, discipline and interpersonal relationships of children in the households. This study therefore aimed at establishing the influence of dual and single families on the development of children's self-esteem, discipline and interpersonal relationships. The research design was causal-comparative, with an accessible population of 4257 Form 3 and Form 4 students being used. The study was carried out in 18 public secondary schools within Nakuru Municipality, Kenya. A sample size of 360 students, from both single and dual parent families was used in the study. Purposive and stratified sampling techniques were used. Data were collected by use of a questionnaire Data analysis was done by use of descriptive, correlation, chi square, ANOVA and t-test statistics. The study recommended that all stakeholders undertake measures aimed at improving self esteem, discipline and interpersonal relationships of the students and especially those with only one parent.
