One of the tiniest tortoise species in the world is the Egyptian tortoise (Testudo kleinmanni), sometimes referred to as the Kleinmann's tortoise or Leith's tortoise. It is native to the arid regions of North Africa, where it has adapted extremely well. Egyptian tortoises grow to be between 400 and 500 grams in weight and 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length as adults. They are distinguished by their unusual high-domed shell, which has deeper patterns and is typically light in color, ranging from pale yellow to golden brown. Their hue aids in their assimilation with the sandy environment. Egyptian tortoises are suited for confinement as pets because of their gentle and peaceful disposition. But because of their small size and delicate nature, handling them requires caution and knowledge.
