Excerpt from The Speaking Telephone, Electric Light and Other Recent Electrical Inventions Within a short time past, a very extended application of elec tricity to illuminating purposes has been made, both in this country and abroad, and just new public interest in this matter is very much excited. It was a long time after Davy's discovery, that the electric current was capable of producing the most brilliant light, before the thought was seriously entertained of putting this agency to practical use as a light producing power. But with the introduction of N ollet's improved magneto-electric machines the thing soon became an accomplished fact, by which the solution of the great problem is to be attained Later and more efficient machines have rendered this application of elec tricity much more feasible, and today its field of usefulness for certain purposes is as clearly defined as that of steam itself. Whether the further introduction of electricity for domestic lighting will realize the expectations of many who are at present studying the subject, remains yet to be seen. The economical side of the problem is still a debatable subject, and one also of very general interest, so that it is not at all surprising, consider ing what has already been accomplished, that the public gives easy credence to many extravagant statements made with regard to it. How much ground there may be for the anticipations of suc cess which are so sanguinely indulged in by friends and pro moters of the new light it would be difficult to say, as consider able secrecy is properly maintained in regard to the devices at present. What has been said on the general subject in the chapters on electric lighting will, however, give the reader a fair knowledge of what has already been done, and thus enable him to judge with some degree of confidence what probability of success there is in prospect in the immediate future. Excerpt from Bell's Electric Speaking Telephone: Its Invention, Construction, Application, Modification and History When Franklin drew from the clouds the electric spark upon the cord of his kite, it seemed obvious that electricity might be made use of for the purpose of telegraphy; and more than one hundred years ago Lesage established a telegraph in Geneva by the use of frictional electricity. But this force had very little power when transmitted over a long distance, and that little was practically uncontrollable, and therefore useless for telegraphy. Excerpt from The Telephone: A Lecture Entitled, Researches in Electric Telephony, Delivered Before the Society of Telegraph Engineers, October 31st, 1877 The president: Gentlemen, the Council of the Society of Telegraph Engineers felt that they were sure of doing what the members would consider right in summoning a special meeting for the two-fold purpose of giving a welcome to Professor Bell to this country and affording the Members an opportunity of hearing from him an account, which he has been so good as to promise to give us, of the nature, history, and development of, what may well be called, one of the most interesting discoveries of our age. Our time is very precious this evening. We all desire to hear everything Professor Bell can tell us on this subject, and many gentlemen will probably desire afterwards to ask questions or discuss the subject, for I see present a great number of eminent scientific men. I will not waste another moment, but at once call upon Professor Bell to commence his discourse on the Electric Telephone. Excerpt from Dumb No Longer: Romance of the Telephone The interesting facts that the writer found form a story so fascinating that it is a source of regret that some gifted writer has not framed it in the language it merits, and brought out more fully the interesting details. For they reveal how the earnest efforts of three women paved the way for - and made possible - the consummation of the cherished hopes of the in ventor and led to the perfecting of that masterly conception of the theory of the transmission of speech electrically, many years earlier than it otherwise would have been. And to all who aided in bringing about the invention of the electric-speaking tele phone at a period when the leaders in physical, electrical, and mechanical sciences either failed to grasp the magnitude of the conception, or believed that while theoretically it was sublime, in practice it would prove of little value, the world will ever owe a debt of gratitude that will multiply as the years roll on. Excerpt from The Age of Electricity, From Amber-Soul to Telephone For the most part, all historical data have been gath ered from publications contemporary with the date of first production of the several discoveries and inventions, and in many cases from the original writings of the inventors and discoverers themselves. As for sources of informa tion in general, the author can only say that there lie before him, at this writing, the first book on electricity ever written in the English language, - Robert Boyle's modest little pamphlet of 1675, and the latest numbers of the electrical journals, fresh from the press; and that he has ranged throughout the whole field of electrical literature anywhere and everywhere, in the most arbitrary manner, between these limits. Excerpt from The Telephone: An Account of the Phenomena of Electricity, Magnetism, and Sound, as Involved in Its Action The popular exhibitions of the speaking-tele phone during the past six months, together with numerous newspaper articles, have created a wide spread interest in the instrument; and it has been thought that a small book explanatory of its action would meet a public want. Excerpt from The Development of the Telephone in Europe F all modern inventions there is none that has so greatly facilitated rapid inter-communication as the telephone. The writing of a letter takes time, and the conveyance of the letter to its destination takes much longer time. The telegraph is instantaneous so far as the conveyance of the electric Signal between point and point is concerned, but it can only be used by expert operators, and the original message must be written at the dispatching end and transcribed afresh at the receiving end. The telephone, on the contrary, is instantaneous between individual and individual. The expert operator is only required to effect the communica tion between the two individuals wishing to speak to one another. The moment that has been done they can talk together almost as easily as if they were in the same room. There is no other means of communication which confers advantages even approaching those given by the telephone. Excerpt from The Telephone Hand-Book This little book has no pretension to be considered a complete treatise on telephony as it exists in America. The time for such a work is not yet come. But it is felt that there is a demand for a practical book on telephone working and management, and The Telephone Hand-Book is an attempt at meeting that demand. With the exception of a few chapters dealing with certain forms of transmitters and receivers used in Europe, which are given for the information of those who are unfamiliar with other types of instruments than those used in this country, the book is based entirely on standard American practice; and most of the material, apparatus and methods described are peculiar to or have originated in this country. With the illustrations no time nor trouble has been spared to make them clear and intelligible, and of real service to the reader. The great majority of them have been executed especially for the book; quite a number have never been published before, others have appeared in the Electrical Engineer and Electrical Review, generally in connection with my own articles. These latter have been re-drawn from the original material wherever possible. As this is the first practical book on American telephone methods, sins of commission and omission will no doubt be met with in its pages. Any suggestions or corrections, which may be addressed to the care of the publishers, will be received in a spirit of due modesty and thankfulness.
