Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: 3.91, , course: Geology/Mining Technology, language: English, abstract: The Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) technique was carried out in Alode Community of Eleme Local Government Area in Rivers State to determine the geo-electrical and hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifers present in the area, and to delineate the geo-electric stratigraphy of each VES station. A total of three (3) VES were carried out with the ABEM Terrameter SAS 300C, using the Schlumberger Configuration. Maximum half-current electrode spread (AB/2) of 1m up to 150m was used, while the half potential electrode separation (MN/2) was maintained between 0.5m and 7.5m. The VES curves were quantitatively interpreted by partial curve matching and computer iteration techniques, using the IP1 WIN computer software. The results of the interpreted VES data confirm the following stratigraphies: top soil (40.2-65.2Ωm), shale (32.2-86.3Ωm), fine-medium sand (172-204Ωm), medium-coarse sand (532Ωm), and medium sand (417Ωm). Geo-electric sections reveal that the aquiferous units are mostly confined, with depth to aquifer range of 47m for VES 1 and 2 and 21m for VES 3.

Subsurface investigation is the most important phase of any civil engineering construction or development activities. The geologic conditions can be extremely complex, variable, and subject to change with time; soil test borings and in-situ tests are employed to obtain subsoil information. Resistivity Imaging (RI) is a non-destructive, fast and cost-effective method of site investigation and soil characterization. Site Investigation using Resistivity Imaging aims to summarize pertinent details of RI in site investigation for geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. It aims to bridge the gap that currently exists between the geotechnical/geo-environmental and geophysical engineering community. The geotechnical and geo-environmental engineers will be able to use annd understand geophysical data and utilize the information for their design. Features: First comprehensive handbook aimed at engineers that summarises pertinent details of Resitivity Imaging (RI) in site investigation for geotechnical and geo-environmental applications. for geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineers, making it possible to interpret geophysical data and utilize the information for their design. explanining the advantages of RI over conventional site investigations: continuous image, large coverage, low cost, quick and easy data processing. It will be a comprehensive handbook for the application of RI in geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigations.

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a popular geophysical subsurface-imaging technique and widely applied to mineral prospecting, hydrological exploration, environmental investigation and civil engineering, as well as archaeological mapping. This chapter offers an overall review of technical aspects of ERT, which includes the fundamental theory of direct-current (DC) resistivity exploration, electrode arrays for data acquisition, numerical modelling methods and tomographic inversion algorithms. The section of fundamental theory shows basic formulae and principle of DC resistivity exploration. The section of electrode arrays summarises the previous study on all traditional-electrode arrays and recommends 4 electrode arrays for data acquisition of surface ERT and 3 electrode arrays for cross-hole ERT. The section of numerical modelling demonstrates an advanced version of finite-element method, called Gaussian quadrature grid approach, which is advantageous to a numerical simulation of ERT for complex geological models. The section of tomographic inversion presents the generalised standard conjugate gradient algorithms for both the l1- and l2-normed inversions. After that, some synthetic and real imaging examples are given to show the near-surface imaging capabilities of ERT.

Field-based electrical resistivity methods offer a nondestructive and rapid means to collect continuous subsurface data. As such, these types of geophysical methods are becoming increasingly popular tools for geotechnical engineers; however, it is challenging to derive geotechnical information, such as soil type, density, and water content, from the field measurements. Laboratory-based soil-box resistivity tests, such as AASHTO T 288-12, Standard Method of Test for Determining Minimum Laboratory Soil Resistivity, are also being used to examine the electrical resistivity of soils; however, it is unclear how density and a number of other factors may affect the results. A laboratory geophysical investigation was carried out to gain a better understanding of the parameters that affect the electrical resistivity of soils and to improve estimates of soil group classifications based on resistivity measurements. Nine different benchmark soils were tested, representing most of the major soil groups according to the unified soil classification system. The effects of water mineralization, water content, degree of saturation, density, and temperature on the measured electrical resistivity of the soils were investigated. The parameters that were found to be most effective in the identification of soil type are bulk density and degree of saturation. While the general trend between saturation and resistivity is known, results indicate that resistivity values reach a lower threshold at around 60 % saturation and that density and water mineralization become less influential as the saturation increases above this threshold. Regardless of the density or saturation, temperature was found to be an important parameter and should be monitored and corrected for in laboratory tests such as AASHTO T 288-12 when results are compared to field data. The influence of particle size and obtaining representative specimens in laboratory soil box testing were also shown to be important.

The Georgia Highway Department has been experimenting with and gaining useful information from the use of an electrical apparatus that measures the resistance of soils to the flow of direct current. This apparatus was built at the Georgia Institute of Technology from drawings designed by the Bureau of Public Roads.
