Greenstone and has been published by Charles C Thomas Publisher this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Psychology categories.

This book is designed to aid in practical, day-to-day, on-the-scene disaster response and crisis intervention by all interveners. The elements are the basics of any discipline. Knowledge of them is critical to achieving success. The Elements of Disaster Psychology: Managing Psychosocial Trauma focuses on those basics that are needed by crisis and disaster responders in the field by providing an integrated approach to force protection and acute care. The presentation is ordered in such a way as to provide quick and easy access to the information needed from the initial deployment, to the final debriefing. The point of this approach is to help the reader accomplish what needs to be done and in the most expeditious and effective manner possible. This book will help responders to be effective when handling the psychosocial problems of victims and of responders as they present. It reflects what is known in the field without all the theory that often accompanies other texts. Much of the confusion about procedures and how to deal with crises has been eliminated. The lists, procedures, suggestions, and guidelines are field-tested and directly related to field situations. Those who want theoretical depth are guided to other sources in the bibliography that can provide such information. The table of contents is prescriptive in nature so that it can be used as a self-contained guide to disaster response. Two additional indices are included to help guide users to specific types of crises or to procedures and techniques and to the chapters of the book that are related. The book can be most appropriately used as a supplemental text in related emergency management, crisis intervention and disaster psychology classes, and it will also be appropriate for first and second responder training. The experienced disaster intervener can use this book independently in the field, in training and in the office.

Psychological service in the wake of cataclysmic life events has emerged as a prominent and visible component of social response. This has generated a bandwagon of potential service providers, service approaches, and service venues. Where once help was scarce, it has become plentiful enough to engender its own set of conflicts and contradictions along with its intended solace and aid. Response to Disaster reconciles the technical, theoretical, and applied interests represented in these various populations and provides a contemporary treatment that can help define the directions of their increasing interaction.

This book offers a broad theoretical foundation by relating and contrasting relevant international literature with the outcomes of a particular research project. It provides a critical reevaluation of the complex phenomena of coping with disasters on a general level by applying this integrative theory of disaster coping to a specific context. A cultural psychological model is developed in order to suggest ways of understanding and assessing local and cultural specificity. This interaction of the general and locally specific is central to our understanding of cultural psychology of coping with disaster. The book provides a basic overview, by presenting various approaches to coping with natural disasters and relating them to each other in a coherent manner. So far, most research approaches either focus on technical, social, psychological or cultural aspects of coping, neglecting their interconnectedness. Coping is seldom seen as an extensive, long-term process, in which disaster relief complexly interacts and is integrated with the local actors and conditions. Until now, a perspective is missing, in which the mentioned modes of coping are integrated with cultural interpretations and practices and long-standing forms of communal self-help, which possibly develop in places that are frequently threatened by natural disasters.

Mental Health And Disasters written by Yuval Neria and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07-20 with Medical categories.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, disaster preparedness and response has developed into a discrete subspecialty in medicine, and the paramount health care initiative of the US Government. The mental health component of disaster response is a serious subject of study, as trauma is associated with a substantial and long-lasting psychologic burden, both on an individual and community level. The psychopathologies associated with disaster are also quite broad, varying from several different types of post-traumatic stress and anxiety disorders to acute variations of grief-associated depression. This book is the definitive reference on mental health and disasters, focused on the assessment and treatment of the full spectrum of psychopathologies associated with many different types of individual disasters. The logistics for utilizing pre-existing community-based mental health services, as well as the development of new programs, are covered in depth. Case studies and perspectives for improving care, incorporating lessons from Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, are included in detail.
