Excerpt from The Elements of French It has been the purpose of the authors to provide an elementary French grammar flexible enough to meet the needs of the inexperienced, as well as of the experienced teacher. For the benefit of the experienced teacher who desires to conduct classes in French almost from the first day, a large amount of oral work has been included. A French translation is given for all grammatical nomenclature in the lessons, so that teachers so desiring may conduct grammar reviews entirely in French. There are also numerous dialogues, and songs, as well as oral questions upon the matter of the reading lessons. For the benefit of the inexperienced teacher, on the other hand, simple translation material - mostly connected - has been provided in every lesson. It is advised that all translation material be worked over orally before the student is permitted to write. To facilitate further the work of the teacher, the book is divided into one hundred twenty-six short lessons, including twenty-two review lessons. An attempt has been made to give always precise indications regarding the manner in which each part of the lesson is to be prepared by the student. The lessons are divided so that each one will probably require about the same amount of preparation. Usually only one grammatical principle is treated in a lesson. Several lessons are generally devoted to each grammatical point, before a new one is taken up. Unessential rules, confusing to the beginner, are relegated to a fairly complete grammatical appendix. In this manner, the volume may serve at the same time as a very simple beginners book, and as a reference grammar for advanced students. College classes will probably be able to cover two lessons per day; high school classes one lesson per day. Excerpt from The Elements of French Composition In presenting this little manual to the teachers and students of French, the author is not venturing upon an untried innovation. The principles upon which it has been constructed have been submitted to the test of experience since the beginning of the year 1895, when the author, in collaboration with Professor Squair of Toronto, published a similar work for use in the High Schools and Colleges of Canada. Both that manual and the present one - which is an entirely new work - proceed from a recognition of the fact that the accurate translation of connected English prose into a living foreign language is an exceedingly delicate operation, and much more difficult than the immediate expression of one's own thoughts through a foreign medium. There is no doubt that, even at a comparatively early stage in the pupil's progress, this practice of translation, as distinguished from original composition, has its value, particularly in cultivating accuracy as regards grammatical form and discrimination in the use of terms. But the English to be translated must be of a decidedly simple order; otherwise the pupil is either discouraged by the amount of assistance he requires, or allowed, in his happy ignorance, to produce a rendering that can not fail to be barbarous and uncouth. And that this is especially the case with a language possessing the extreme precision of French, no one who has seriously attempted to master that speech will think of denying.
