N'este processo as cellulas superficiaes, successivamente afastadas para a peripheria pelos novos elementos subjacentes, achatam-se, transformam-se em laminas corneas e caem debaixo da forma de escamas depois de morrerem por insuficiente nutricao. Os elementos epitheliaes que desapparecem sao em pouco substituidos por outros identicos; todavia ha pontos do organismo em que nao ha descamacao: endocardio, tunica interna dos vasos, e regiao da cavidade uterina onde se insere a placenta (Ch. Robin); n'este ultimo caso porem, e em todos que lhe sao identicos, as cellulas modificam-se consideravelmente mudando de forma, hypertrophiando-se, infiltrando-se de granulacoes gordurosas, etc. Estas mesmas modificacoes se observam todas as vezes que accidentalmenle se criam obstaculos a descamacao epithelial. Alguns epithelios formadores teem uma terminacao differente: fundem-se, caem em deliquio e sao utilisados no momento em que se destacam constituindo uma parte essencial do producto da secrecao. Alguns auctores tratam n'este logar do tecido glandular. Nas glandulas, porem, nao ha elemento histologico algum novo ou especial, ha simplesmente um arranjo ou disposicao de tecidos elementares de maneira a formarem ura orgao. O tecido elementar por excellencia (Testes orgaos e o epithelio, havendo ainda outros elementos indispensaveis a sua contextura (tecido conjunctivo, vasos, nervos, etc.).
