Yet again, author Steve Wohlberg artfully tackles a huge subject in just a handful of words. He brings into focus the seemingly nebulous topic of the emerging church movement by joining Scripture with history. Jesus Himself firmly noted to His disciples: “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:4&8211;5). The author makes Christ’s solemn warning personal in that “you” not only meant the disciples, but Christ was speaking directly to you, the reader. Emerging church proponents maintain that a change is needed in the church today; otherwise, many will be lost. They believe that changes need to be made in churches today to appeal to the electronically minded and to keep up with the times. Yet the God of the heavens exclaims, “I am the Lord, I do not change” (Malachi 3:6). The changes that emerging church advocates, such as Leonard Sweet, Brian McLaren, Richard Foster, and others, endorse are not really new. In fact, they are steeped in the Eastern mystic philosophies of Hinduism, Buddhism, and especially that of medieval Rome. “Eastern meditation is an attempt to empty the mind,” Richard Foster wrote in his book Celebration of Discipline. Those partisan to the emerging church doctrine look to Ignatius Loyola, who established the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits, as their founding father. “Inside a cave in Manresa, Spain, Ignatius emptied his mind. The otherworldly impressions did come from a ghostly entity claiming to be the Virgin Mary. That ghost gave directions. ‘Fine,’ Loyola decided. ‘I will obey’” (The Emerging Church Trap, page 24). Christ spoke directly to the danger of emptying our minds in the book of Matthew: “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12:43-45)

Churches today are caught in a sociological trap. Parishioners want to keep comfortable status quo organization. Churchmen feel the pressure to modernize, to "get where the action is." This book is a provocative and zesty analysis of the problem. Dishonest to God? The churches have followed corporations in emphasizing fat figures and solid annual growth. If religion were sold like stocks you would have the "high fliers" like the booming Southern Baptists and the Roman Catholics, the "blue chip" denominations-Episcopalians, Congregationalists, and Presbyterians-and then those with small growth potential like the Jews. The "sick" clergy. Most clergymen of the various faiths, needless to say, are not alcoholic or homosexual. On the other hand enough clergymen have these problems to cause concern, and beyond the slippery labels of neuroses there are enough inward tortured people in the clergy to make church authorities wonder what in heaven is wrong. The future. One of the basic models for churchly change is ecumenism, but although ecumenism may look good on the drawing board, it has some very formidable hurdles before it . There is no sign in the heavens that the organized religion in America will be granted a resurrection.

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. —Proverbs 5:15–17 Solomon’s divine counsel to the bride of Christ often goes unheeded in these last days of Earth’s history. Pastors and church members alike dip into the wells of the world and drink from the tainted source of those strangers to truth. Pastors turn and face the sun of Babylon when they attend learn at the feet of professors at schools like George Fox University that teach eastern mysticism, spiritual formation, contemplative prayer, Ignatian spirituality, which are all components of the emerging church movement. The prophet Isaiah had this word of caution found in chapter 8, verse 20: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Even though the Holy Writ makes this stern warning, it seems that Seventh-day Adventist pastors are converging on centers of learning that train these wayward descendents of the seed of Abraham. Then their unsuspecting flocks, which they are to protectively shepherd, fall prey to the wolf in sheep’s clothing because they learn the same error that their shepherd gleaned at the university. One of these pastors went so far as to put this erroneous, Jesuit-endorsed teaching in print to disperse it to a broader audience. He notes beginning on the first page of the first chapter of his book The Green Cord Dream that “the Advent movement was born in failure rather than success, error rather than truth, darkness rather than light, and sorrow rather than joy” (pages 11, 12). In this context the author does not give credence to the prophecy of the Great Disappointment on October 22, 1844, found in Revelation 10:9, 10: “I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter.” When God’s prophecy is fulfilled, how is that failure? In addition to the issue of The Green Cord Dream, author Rick Howard brings information to light in this book Meet It about The One Project movement. He answers questions like: What is it? Where did it come from? Who is responsible for its creation? On the surface it looks promising, but when delving under the superficial outer layers, the powers of darkness are found lurking. At an October 2011 meeting of The One Project group, eleven authors were noted as being “the most helpful.” Yet, they all promote and support the emerging church, spiritual formation interests. They all endorse and advance mysticism and spiritism, and all of them are leaders and teachers of these principles that are designed to win souls to Romanism. Rick Howard’s Meet It indeed probes the subtle nuances of this issue of the Omega apostasy where much is to be found. Herein he picks up where his first volume, The Omega Rebellion, stopped and offers details that opens the eyes and ears of the elect who do not want this deception to enter any of the parameters of their lives.

In The End of Evangelicalism? David Fitch examines the political presence of evangelicalism as a church in North America. Amidst the negative image of evangelicalism in the national media and its purported decline as a church, Fitch asks how evangelicalism's belief and practice has formed it as a political presence in North America. Why are evangelicals perceived as arrogant, exclusivist, duplicitous, and dispassionate by the wider culture? Diagnosing its political cultural presence via the ideological theory of Slavoj Zizek, Fitch argues that evangelicalism appears to have lost the core of its politic: Jesus Christ. In so doing its politic has become "empty." Its witness has been rendered moot. The way back to a vibrant political presence is through the corporate participation in the triune God's ongoing work in the world as founded in the incarnation. Herein lies the way towards an evangelical missional political theology. Fitch ends his study by examining the possibilities for a new faithfulness in the current day emerging and missional church movements springing forth from evangelicalism in North America.
