Joseph McCabe brings us another book chronicling the empresses of the Classic and Medieval Era, which in this particular publication, focuses on the rise and fall of Constantinople's empresses. Constantinople's empresses came from backgrounds far more varied than its Western Roman Empire counterpart, ranging from "princesses to village girls, tavern girls or circus girls." Featured in this book are famous names such as the empress regnant and Eastern Orthodox saint Theodora the Blessed; the actress turned empress consort Theodora I; and the author and princess Anna Comnena.

Excerpt from The Empresses of Constantinople In concluding an earlier volume on the mistresses of the western Roman Empire I observed that, as the gallery of fair and frail ladies closed, we stood at the door of "the long, quaint gallery of the Byzantine Empresses." It seemed natural and desirable to pass on to this more interesting and less familiar series of the mistresses of the eastern Roman Empire, and the present volume will therefore tell the story of the Empresses, or Queens, as they preferred to be called, who occupied the throne set up by Constantine in New Rome, or ancient Byzantium, until the victorious Turk thrust it disdainfully aside to make way for his more spacious harem. The eastern or Byzantine Empire has long been regarded in Europe as a world of far less interest than that which centred on the banks of the Tiber: a world of monotonous piety and little adventure or spirit, almost Chinese in its placid and unchanging adherence to traditional and very conventional forms. One is tempted to attribute this error, not merely to the longer concealment of Byzantine antiquities from our fathers and the superior attractiveness of Italy, but, in some measure, to the disproportion of Gibbon's work. Excerpt from Constantinople There would seem to be no description of the situation and importance of Constantinople so clear, so eloquent, and so minutely accurate, as that of Gibbon. We have therefore transferred it to the following pages, to serve as an introduction, warning our readers that'a know ledge of the topography of Constantinople is absolutely necessary to the right understanding of its history. This which is true of all cities, is more peculiarly true as regards Constantinople. For this reason we have not only preferred to quote Gibbon's account in full, but we have prefixed as frontispiece a map of the city. Excerpt from Constantinople: Old and New This is not a book of learning, but I have required a great deal of help in putting it together, and I cannot close this prefatory note without acknowledging my in debtedness to more kind friends than I have space to name. Most of all I owe to Mr. E. L. Burlingame, of Scribner's Magazine, and to my father, Dr. H. O. Dwight, without whose encouragement, moral and material, during many months, I could never have afforded the luxury of writing a book. I am also under obligation to their Excellencies, J. G. A. Leishman, O. S. Straus, and W. W. Rockhill, American ambassadors to the Porte, and especially to the last, for cards of admis sion, letters of introduction, and other facilities for col lecting material. Among many others who have taken the trouble to give me assistance of one kind or another I particularly wish to express my acknowledgments to Arthur Baker, Esq.; to Mgr. Christophoros, Bishop of Pera; to F. Mortimer Clapp, Esq.; to Feridoun Bey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Constantine, the Last Emperor of the Greeks: Or the Conquest of Constantinople by the Turks (A. D. 1453), After the Latest Historical Researches The German Emperor Frederic III. in a letter written June 1453 to Pope Nicholas V., lamenting greatly the catastrophe on the Bosphorus, calls Constantinople "the capital of the Eastern Empire, the head of Greece, the home of arts and literature" ("Orientalis imperii sedem, Græciæ caput. . . veluti domicilium litterarum artiumque"). And indeed, from the time of Constantine the Great to the time when the dawn of Renaissance aroused Italy to her noble task, Constantinople was the capital of Christian civilization. Its place in the history of the world has been always a most remarkable one, - Rome being the only city which can successfully bear comparison with it.
