Psalms 146-150, sometimes called “Final Hallel” or “Minor Hallel”, are often argued to have been written as a literary end of the Psalter. However, if sources other than the Hebrew Masoretic Text are taken into account, such an original unit of Psalms 146-150 has to be questioned. “The End of the Psalter” presents new interpretations of Psalms 146-150 based on the oldest extant evidence: the Hebrew Masoretic Text, the Hebrew Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Greek Septuagint. Each Psalm is analysed separately in all three sources, complete with a translation and detailed comments on form, intertextuality, content, genre, and date. Comparisons of the individual Psalms and their intertextual references in the ancient sources highlight substantial differences between the transmitted texts. The book concludes that Psalms 146-150 were at first separate texts which only in the Masoretic Text form the end of the Psalter. It thus stresses the importance of Psalms Exegesis before Psalter Exegesis, and argues for the inclusion of ancient sources beyond to the Masoretic Text to further our understanding of the Psalms.

The clear structure of psalm groups in Psalms 107-150 can be interpreted as signaling a renewed hope in the royal/Davidic promises. Each psalm group of Book V is organized around a theme or key word that is related to the royal/Davidic hope in the earlier sections of the Psalter: Psalms 107-118; Psalm 119; Psalms 120-137; Psalms 138-145; Psalms 146-150. These words and themes figure prominently at the major seam psalms of the Psalter – Psalms 1-2 and 89. Thus, the content and subject matter at the end of the Psalter is integrally related to the content and subject matter at the beginning. The editorial-critical method used by Snearly is an extension of the method used by David M. Howard, Jr. in The Structure of Psalms 93-100. Snearly also draws from recent insights in the fields of poetics and text-linguistics in order to establish a linguistically based foundation for reading the Psalter as a unified text. The methodology emphasizes parallel features, with special focus on key-word links. This method advances editorial criticism by not only discerning links within a group but also showing that those links do not occur with the same frequency outside of the group.

The composition of the fourth book is in no way inferior to that of the other four books already analysed. Its three major sections, each containing five psalms, are organised in a concentric fashion; they are linked by two short sections which constitute the focal points of the ellipse that the whole book draws. The extreme sections are related. The first section (Ps 90âe"94) describes âeoethe fate of the children of Adamâe , the last one (Ps 102âe"106) âeoethe fate of the children of Israelâe . All are subject to the law of human affliction. They are like the grass that flourishes in the morning and withers and dries up in the evening; and sin accompanies frailty. As the refuge of humanity from generation to generation, the Lord saves people by satisfying those who fear him for many days and by assuring his faithfulness to the children of their children, from age to age. Despite their repeated unfaithfulness, God does not grow weary of forgiving them. The central section (Ps 96âe"100) stands out from the rest of the book, which it overshadows. All peoples are called to come to Jerusalem to worship the King of the universe and to bless him who has saved the chosen people from among all the families of the earth. Carried by the promise of the one God and by the hope of the one people, this invitation is situated on the unattained, but always desired eschatological horizon. The focal points of the ellipsis (Ps 95 and Ps 101) are the key to reading the book. The first one focuses on a wish addressed to humans: âeoeToday if you would only listen to his voiceâe (Ps 95:7). The second one poses a question to God: âeoeWhen will you come to me?âe (Ps 101:2). Therefore, the whole fourth book is captured in this tension between Godâe(tm)s desire and human desire, each going to meet the other, in a âeoetodayâe whose fragility places every human being between the morning when the grass flourishes and the evening when it dries up, between the time of the fathers, which the last section evokes at length, the time of sin and forgiveness, and the time of salvation and of the end, which the central section contemplates.

The second book of the Psalter, like the first, third and fifth books, forms a highly elaborate composition. Indeed, not only each of its thirty psalms is well composed, but also each of the sequences that bring out two or three psalms; and finally, the five sections arranged in a concentric manner around the five psalms in a low voice (Ps 56-60). Two complementary movements form and animate the entire second book. On the one hand, evil and violence are everywhere, as are enemies. First of all, they are those from outside, pagan peoples who trample on Israel; but the psalmist later discovers that enemies from within are no less violent, and that violence comes even from his closest friends, those in whom he puts all his trust. Sin, that has always been rooted in the depths of their hearts, marks all human beings. Its most pernicious form is a lie which, like the lion and the viper, hides itself to attack more effectively. It is certainly no coincidence that the serpent is mentioned right at the centre of the central section, reminding us of the deadly venom of the serpent at the beginning which was injected into the whole of humanity. On the other hand, salvation is meant for all those who trust in God, in his faithfulness and in his truth. Hence the thanksgiving that resounds throughout the book, right to the end. It resounds not only in the mouth of the people of Israel, saved by God, but also on the lips of all the other peoples; the pagan nations, who are bringing gifts to the Temple, lifting up their hands in prayer to the one God, who is King of all the earth. They, who at the beginning of the book were presented as the enemies and oppressors of the chosen people, will join Israel at the end of the book in the same blessing promised to Abraham: By your offspring shall all the nations of the earth blessed themselves (Gen 22:18).

The third book of the Psalter is considerably shorter than the first book and especially than the fifth book. Nevertheless, its seventeen psalms form a composition which is not at all inferior to that of the other two books. The general tone of the book is extremely dark. There are only complaints, supplications and anguished questions: âeoeWhy?âe , âeoeHow long?âe And the answers given to these questions do not seem to console the unfortunate. If they are in distress and anguish, it is their fault. They pay the price for their sins (Ps 78 & Ps 89). Having betrayed the covenant at the time of the exodus, having repeated it at the time of the Davidic monarchy, they are now left to the violence and oppression of their enemies. The voice of the Servant is heard crying out at the centre of the first book: âeoeMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?âe (Ps 22:2). However, Ps 22 does not end in the grave. The psalmist is saved from the lionâe(tm)s mouth and can say: âeoeI will recount your name to my brothers, and in the midst of the assembly I will praise youâe (22:23) and even: âeoeall the families of the nations will bow down before youâe (22:28). Likewise, there are three psalms in the third book where praise resounds, each of them is found in a strategic position. At the centre of the first sequence of the initial section (Ps 75) with all his people the psalmist gives thanks seeing that the Lord is pronouncing judgment on the arrogant and he rejoices that soon he will be able to cut off their horns. At the centre of the central section (Ps 81), a fervent call to praise celebrating the exodus from Egypt precedes a lengthy speech by God promising new liberation from the present enemies and their conversion. Finally, at the centre of the first sequence of the final section, David in his misery and lament confirms the conversion of the Gentiles: âeoeAll the nations which you have made will come and will bow down to your face, O Lord, and will give glory to your nameâe (86:9). Like the servant in Ps 22, the people and their king had to pass through death so that the light of revelation could reach all the ends of the earth.

Lavishly illustrated with thirty colour plates, several black and white images and a number of musical scores, this volume also includes a comprehensive glossary of terms for readers less familiar with the subject and a full, selective bibliography complete with footnote references for each psalm. This dissertation is an attempt to interpret Psalms 146-150 in the context of the Hebrew Psalter, employing a canonical methodology. Chapter 1 introduces a brief history of Psalms studies with a particular emphasis to the recent paradigm shift in the field. The new paradigm discusses the Pslater to be more than a mere anthology of praises and prayers, lacking any purposeful editorial activity. Instead, it considers the Psalter as a book, a literary entity with coherence. Thus this study considers Psalms 146-150 as part of the Hebrew Psalter with a specific function of being fivefold doxology. Chapter 2 analyzes each of Psalms 146-150 as a separate entity, employing largely the traditional form-critical and cult-functional approaches. This analysis provides information concerning their intertextual relationship which Chapter 3 discusses. The result of the analysis reveals that these psalms share numerous key-word and thematic links, such as Yahweh's sovereignty as the Maker of heaven and earth. Chapter 4 examines proposals on the Fifth Book of the Hebrew Psalter as a literary whole and proposes Psalms 146-150 to be non-integral to the Fifth Book based on the following reasons: 1) Psalm 145:21 is the missing doxology to the Fifth Book, and Psalms 146-150 respond to that invitation; 2) Psalms 146-150 form a self-contained unit, nicely enveloped by the initial "Hallelujah" in Psalm 146 and the final "Hallelujah" in Psalm 150 which stay inside the psalm proper; 3) Psalms 1-2 are a twofold introduction and Psalms 146-150 a fivefold conclusion to the Psalter, leaving the same number of psalms in Book I (Pss. 3-41) and Book V (Pss. 107-145); and 4) the fivefold doxologies at the end of each book parallel Psalms 146-150 as the fivefold grand doxologies to the entire Psalter. Chapter 5 examines intertextual relationship between Psalms 1-2 and Psalms 146-150 and concludes that the former invites its readers to consider the psalms to be the instruction from God whose reign must be acknowledged in spite of valleys in life, and the latter to lead a life of praise.
