Divided into six books accompanied by appendixes, indexes, and scholarly appurtenances, this work attests to Henry Dexter's remarkable expertise with respect to the source records of the English and Dutch backgrounds of the Pilgrim Fathers. The six books together constitute an encyclopedic history of Pilgrim affairs in England and Holland, a systematic examination of every facet of Pilgrim life from the shaping of the Protestant conscience to the history of the Separatists--their persecutions in England and their churches in Amsterdam and Leyden--to summaries and particulars of those who set out to America on the Mayflower, the Fortune, the Anne, and the Little James. The entries, typically, give place of origin, occupation, names of wives (with dates of betrothal), references to contemporary Dutch records, and a variety of incidental matter-in all, a successful attempt at enumerating the whole company of Pilgrims in Holland.

Excerpt from The England and Holland of the Pilgrims Most of. The contents of this work were collected by my father, the late Dr. Henry M. Dexter. To this task he devoted much of his time for many years. Of Pilgrim descent and born almost within sight of Plymouth Rock, he desired to give to the world a more complete record than any which had been written of the religious and ecclesiastical movement in England that made the Pilgrims what they were, and of their emigration to Holland and their life there before they came to America. But he died in 1890, leaving his chosen task unaccomplished. In his first rough draft he had written five long chapters which appear in these pages as the first five books and a part Iof the sixth. But they were hardly more than rudely shaped masses of crude material, as he had not reached that work of revision which no one else was more competent than he to per form. By his will the manuscript passed at his death into the hands of Prof. Franklin B. Dexter, Litt. D., of Yale University, and myself. Professor Dexter completed the author's last chap ter, or book, and I have rewritten and edited the whole, adding considerable material obtained by my own researches. Excerpt from The Pilgrims in Their Three Homes, England, Holland, America On the 24th of February, 1890, the Boston Congregational Club passed the following resolution: - Whereas, Remembering the hospitality of the free republic of Holland, so generously bestowed upon the Pilgrims, who, after twelve years' residence in Amsterdam and Leyden, sailed from Delfshaven on a voyage which was completed at Plymouth Rock, it is fitting that we, members of Congregational Clubs throughout the United States, should unite in grateful recognition of Dutch hospitality, and at Delfshaven raise some durable token of our appreciation of both hosts and guests, - calling upon all Americans who honor alike the principles and the founders of the two republics to join in the enterprise. Therefore be it Resolved, That the Club heartily approves of the erection of such a commemorative monument. With force, Mrs. Austin has indirectly called attention to the fact that the Pilgrims were not all Puritans in thought or demeanor. Suggestions for costumes are given under Characters in the play, founded largely upon the authentic statements of Mrs. Alice Morse Earle, in her Two Centuries of Costume in America (new York, and other accepted volumes of later date. Excerpt from Chronicles: Of the Pilgrim Fathers of the Colony of Plymouth, From 1602 to 1625 This volume will be found to contain an authentic History of the Pilgrim Fathers who planted the Colony of Plymouth, from their origin in John Robinson's congregation in 1602, to his death in 1625, written by themselves. Some account of the nature of these Chronicles, and of the circumstances which led to their compilation in this form, may not be unacceptable to the reader. It is well known to those who are familiar with the early history of New England, that William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth, wrote a History of that People and Colony from 1602 to 1647, in 270 folio pages; which was used by Morton in compiling his Memorial, by Hutchinson in writing his History of Massachusetts, and by Prince in digesting his Annals of New England. Excerpt from The Pilgrims: A Story of Massachusetts This volume is designed to cover the history of New England, in the form of a story, from 1620 to 1644, the period at which the New England colonies formed their first confederation for mutual protection. Mathew Stevens, a youth born at St. Augustine of Spanish and French parents, had been abducted and carried to England, in the year 1586, by Sir Francis Drake, and was there pur chased by Mr. John Robinson, who had compas sion on the child, and brought him up in the fear of the Lord. Thus Mathew Stevens (mattheo Estevan), though born of a Catholic father, became an English Puritan. By transferring the Estevan family from Florida to England, they are changed from Spanish to English, without breaking the lineal descent from the first youth who sailed with Columbus to Mathew Stevens the young Puritan. His romantic adventures and singular love affair form the chief groundwork for this story. In order that the reader may have a better idea of the Pilgrims and their peculiar persecutions, the story Opens with their flight into Holland. Just a glimpse of their life in Leyden is given, and they are hastened on board the Mayflower, where will be found as full and accurate an account of their memorable voyage as can be given without weary ing one with useless detail. Though the Pilgrims and the colony of. Massachusetts form the main features of the story, it embraces the history of North America from the time at which the novel Pocahontas left off, to the year when the col onies of New England were united.
