Excerpt from English Literature, Vol. 2 HE play, unlike the novel, is the most rigid Of literary forms, with the exception perhaps of the sonnet. In a novel the author has an almost free hand. He can tell his story quite objectively, he can make himself the hero, he can translate his characters most secret thoughts. He can make his novel a hundred, or five hundred, pages in length, and his story can last twenty-four years or as many hours. But the dramatist has no such easy task. He has to present a story within certain dimensions he cannot avail himself of the almost unlimited fields of the novel and of the film. Practical considerations play an important part. In the first place, because it is presenting rather than relating a fact, a play must be confined to a certain length, for the reason that no audience can Sit still for more than a few hours. In the second place, the characters have to speak for themselves, their motives and thoughts have to be made clear by their actions. And now, since the school Of naturalism has won the day, they are not even allowed the Simple, though sometimes ridiculous device, of the soliloquy, by which, in talking to himself, a character tells the audience facts necessary for the development Of the plot. Even the place of action is limited by the inability of the stage-hands to change more than a certain number of scenes in a given time, and by the more crude considerations of cost. Excerpt from Dramatists of the Present Day The belief is wide spread that the English stage is in sickly mood. Those who should best know its condition loudly lament its decline and are proposing means of cure. The restorative measures which have already been suggested are diverse. Last year there was a prolonged discussion on the subject in the press, between authors, actors, and managers. Mr. Boucicault, who had a remedy, originated the controversy. In the lapsed interval much was achieved; but one thing remained for him to accomplish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ben Jonson S Plays Vol 1 Of 2 Classic Reprint written by Ben Jonson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-26 with Drama categories.

Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a tri e better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Tales From the Dramatists, Vol. 3 of 4 [Of English dramatists, none have worked more earnestly, and few more successfully, for the stage than the two Colmans, father and son. George Colman "the elder" was born at Florence in 1732, his first play, "Sally Honeycomb," being produced in 1760, with great success. Of his many plays, "The Jealous Wife" and 'The Clandestine Marriage" were the most successful, and are those by which he is now best remembered. His son, George Colman "the younger," was born in 1762, and in 1785 succeeded his father in the office of manager of the Haymarket Theatre, which he had long held. He was as prolific a dramatist as his father, producing numerous plays, several of which still hold the stage. He was appointed Examiner of Plays in 1824, in which office he gave great offence to rival dramatists. He died in 1836. Of the many successful plays of the younger Colman, those best known to the modern theatre-goers are "The Heir at Law" and "The Poor Gentleman."
