Excerpt from The Parabolic Teaching of Christ: Or, the Engravings of the New Testament There is a perfectly clear and broad distinction to be observed between the parable and the fable or the myth. This is well laid down by Alford in his Notes on the New Testament. The par able is not a fable, inasmuch as the fable is concerned only with the maxims of worldly prudence, whereas the parable conveys Spiritual truth. The fable in its form rejects probability, and teaches through the fancy, introducing speaking animals, or even inanimate things, whereas the parable adheres to probability, and teaches through the imagination, introducing only things which may possibly happen. Nor is the parable a myth, inasmuch as in mythology the course of the story is set before us as the truth, and Simple minds receive it as the truth, only the reflecting mind penetrates into the distinction between the vehicle and the thing conveyed; whereas in the parable these two things stand distinct from one another to all minds, so that the simplest would never believe in the parable as fact.
