Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 8/A, University of Twente , course: Economic Governance, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The article focuses on EU enlargement and economic implications on labour markets in the former EU-15. Here, migration plays the central role for the theoretical and political discussion. Many fear migration waves. A run on Western European jobs was about to occur. Accordingly, almost all Member States have taken steps to shut off there labour markets for a certain period of time, thereby denying real membership for the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC). Are these resentments justified? Is Europe in a ‘race to the bottom’? Will migrants put the welfare state at stake, or may they even be the solution for inherent problems in Western European societies, such as ageing? Different approaches to making enlargement worthwhile will be discussed.

Social Europe has become a major issue in the debate on the referendum on the draft Constitutional Treaty in France. In order to better understand these challenges, in a context of intense questioning on the future of Social Europe, we must first specify its boundaries and its content by means of an analysis of the European social model. This analysis will firstly take a political, sociological and historical approach, then will follow a legal route, by emphasising the evolving character of the body of European legislation. In this way, we will be able to analyse the causes of the current "crisis' better, by establishing the reasons and outlining some roads to reorganisation.

Under the impact of accelerated globalization, transnational integration and international security concerns, the geopolitics of Europe's borders and border regions has become an area of critical interest. The progressive enlargement of the EU has positioned its borders at the heart of recent discussions on the changing nature of the EU, the meaning of 'Europe' and what constitutional shape a more politically unified Europe might take. With enlargement, the EU must elaborate strategies to contend with a fiercely competitive world - and to build fortress-like defences against perceived tensions arising from greater cultural mixing and threats such as terrorism. The authors build up an integral picture of the EU's internal and external borders and borderlands to reveal the processes of re-bordering and social change currently taking place in Europe. They explore issues such as security, immigration, economic development and changing social and political attitudes, as well as the EU's relations with the Islamic world and other world powers. The book embraces an array of disciplinary, ideological and theoretical perspectives, offering detailed case studies of different border regions and the concerns of the local inhabitants, while engaging in broader discussions of developments across Europe, state policies and the EU's relations with neighbouring states. Geopolitics of European Union Enlargement will be of key interest to students and researchers in the fields of European politics, geography, international studies, sociology and anthropology.

The enlargement of European-based organisations has reached a near terminal point. The Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) currently cover virtually all states of Europe (Belarus still remains excluded from the first of these). The EU and NATO have experienced extensive processes of enlargement and the scope for continuing enlargement is now limited largely to the Balkans and the European neutrals. Given this state of affairs it is now pertinent to think of a Europe characterised not by enlargement but by post-enlargement.In International Relations (IR) conceptual thinking on Europe (as opposed just to the EU) has been undertaken using a range of scholarly tools. In this volume, attention to Europe proceeds from English School (ES) thinking, and specifically its three-fold distinction between international system, international society and world society. It is the international society element (the development/institutionalisation of shared interests and identities buttressed by rules and norms) which signifies in their most concrete form different patterns of interaction or integration between states. This book will be of interest to international relations scholars, as well as practitioners within the European Union and other intergovernmental institutions. It was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

The term ‘social dumping’ regularly appears in public debates and in policymaking circles. However, due to its ambiguity it is used in a manner that is convenient for individual discourse participants, thus opening the door for misconceptions and ill-grounded accusations. This book systematically examines social dumping in the context of the European integration process. It defines social dumping as the practice, undertaken by self-interested market participants, of undermining or evading existing social regulations with the aim of gaining a competitive advantage. It also shows how the two major EU integration projects  the creation of the Internal Market, and EU enlargement to the east and to the south  have provided market actors with new incentives and opportunities to contest existing social ‘constraints’. The empirical chapters examine social dumping practices accompanying labour migration, employee posting and cross-border investment distribution. In addition, they outline the process of formation of social standards and trace initiatives at EU and national levels that contribute to the spread of social dumping in Europe. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of employment relations, EU studies, international political economy, globalisation studies, welfare studies, social policy and migration studies.
