On The Origin Of Stories written by Brian Boyd and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

A century and a half after the publication of Origin of Species, evolutionary thinking has expanded beyond the field of biology to include virtually all human-related subjects—anthropology, archeology, psychology, economics, religion, morality, politics, culture, and art. Now a distinguished scholar offers the first comprehensive account of the evolutionary origins of art and storytelling. Brian Boyd explains why we tell stories, how our minds are shaped to understand them, and what difference an evolutionary understanding of human nature makes to stories we love. Art is a specifically human adaptation, Boyd argues. It offers tangible advantages for human survival, and it derives from play, itself an adaptation widespread among more intelligent animals. More particularly, our fondness for storytelling has sharpened social cognition, encouraged cooperation, and fostered creativity. After considering art as adaptation, Boyd examines Homer’s Odyssey and Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who! demonstrating how an evolutionary lens can offer new understanding and appreciation of specific works. What triggers our emotional engagement with these works? What patterns facilitate our responses? The need to hold an audience’s attention, Boyd underscores, is the fundamental problem facing all storytellers. Enduring artists arrive at solutions that appeal to cognitive universals: an insight out of step with contemporary criticism, which obscures both the individual and universal. Published for the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of Species, Boyd’s study embraces a Darwinian view of human nature and art, and offers a credo for a new humanism.

The Causes Of Evolution written by John Burdon Haldane and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-10-10 with Science categories.

J.B.S. Haldane (1892-1964), one of the founders of the science of population genetics, was also one of the greatest practitioners of the art of explaining science to the layperson. Haldane was a superb story-teller, as his essays and his children's books attest. In The Causes of Evolution he not only helped to marry the new science of genetics to the older one of evolutionary theory but also provided an accessible introduction to the genetical basis of evolution by natural selection. Egbert Leigh's new introduction to this classic work places it in the context of the ongoing study of evolution. Describing Haldane's refusal to be confined by a "System" as a "light-hearted" one, Leigh points out that we are now finding that "Haldane's questions are the appropriate next stage in learning how adaptation can evolve. We are now ready to reap the benefit of the fact that Haldane was a free man in the sense that really matters."

"The Evolutionary Epic is the science-inspired story that starts with the Big Bang and ends at the present with complex beings on Earth who understand who they are and how they came to be. The Epic is science because, at its core, it provides a naturalistic explanation and adheres to well-accepted science. The Epic is story because it takes an art form -- story telling -- to weave the fundamentals of physical, biological, and cultural evolution into easily understood, humanly engaging, culturally-imbedded narratives. Besides being science and story, the Epic is also education. An understanding of the Evolutionary Epic can weave many otherwise disparate courses of study together. And the Epic is spiritual, even religious, because the Epic -- and the cosmos it embodies -- elicits awe and reverence, and is seen by many as God's way of implementing a divine plan. Finally, the Epic is humanity and Earth -- the sudden dominance of a sentient species and all that implies for the planet." -- from the conference Web site.

The first ever picture-book retelling of Charles Darwin's On The Origin of Species. 'A long, long time ago, before humans even existed, the living world looked very different from how it looks today.' For most of human history, people believed that everything in the world was created at once. But scientists started to challenge that idea and in 1859 Charles Darwin, a naturalist and biologist, wrote a famous book called On the Origin of Species that revolutionised the way that we have understood evolution ever since. Now molecular biologist and illustrator Sabina Radeva has recreated Darwin's most famous work as a beautifully illustrated book for children and adults alike. The stunning pictures bring the theory of evolution to life for young readers, and anyone who wants to learn about evolution. Pulling together Darwin's observations from his travels around the world and his ground-breaking explanation of how species form, develop, and change over hundreds of thousands of years, On The Origin of Species is as relevant and important now as it ever was. A very important project, most beautifully realised. Sabina Radeva's thoughtful text and gorgeous pictures together tell the story of On The Origin of Species, and of Evolution itself, with clarity, humour and great charm. - Emma Darwin An entrancing picture-book retelling of Darwin's on the Origin of Species ... filled with informative, beautifully designed diagrams and maps. - The Guardian

The Rise Of Man written by Paul Carus and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-03 with Science categories.

Excerpt from The Rise of Man: A Sketch of the Origin of the Human Race Darwin's views were bitterly opposed, although it would seem more dignified if God had fashioned the first man (not directly from a clod of soil, but indirectly after a long preparation of the material) through series of inter mediate stages of lower animals, from the infinitely more refined organism of an anthropoid brute. Yet, even from the standpoint of modern science we can still insist that man, though his body consists of the same material as the dust of the earth, holds an unique position among the rest of creation. The sway of conservatism, however, is great, and so the people trained in the old views of thought clung with tenacity to a literal belief in the story of Genesis. In spite of all that Darwin said in favor of the kinship of man to the rest of animate creation, almost half a century passed before the doctrine of evolution gained ground and became universally recognized; and there were no other objections to it, than the implication as to man's descent from lower forms of life and the denial of the legend that God had formed him directly from the dust of the earth. At present there may be no one trained in modes of scientific thinking who does not unhesitatingly accept the doctrine of evolution with all that it implies; but having understood the physiological solution of the origin of man, it may be wise to look at the argument of the reactionary party, whose main contention consists in ridiculing the idea that man was descended from the ape. Excerpt from The History of Creation, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Development of the Earth and Its Inhabitants by the Action of Natural Causes, a Popular Exposition of the Doctrine of Evolution in General, and of That of Darwin, Goethe, and Lamrck in Particular The History of Creation has been so much modified by its author, Professor Haeckel, in its successive German editions, and so much new matter introduced, that it was felt to be desirable that a new English edition of the work should be prepared.
