In 1401, Christine de Pizan (1365–1430?), one of the most renowned and prolific woman writers of the Middle Ages, wrote a letter to the provost of Lille criticizing the highly popular and widely read Romance of the Rose for its blatant and unwarranted misogynistic depictions of women. The debate that ensued, over not only the merits of the treatise but also of the place of women in society, started Europe on the long path to gender parity. Pizan’s criticism sparked a continent-wide discussion of issues that is still alive today in disputes about art and morality, especially the civic responsibility of a writer or artist for the works he or she produces. In Debate of the “Romance of the Rose,” David Hult collects, along with the debate documents themselves, letters, sermons, and excerpts from other works of Pizan, including one from City of Ladies—her major defense of women and their rights—that give context to this debate. Here, Pizan’s supporters and detractors are heard alongside her own formidable, protofeminist voice. The resulting volume affords a rare look at the way people read and thought about literature in the period immediately preceding the era of print.

Rose Bretano’s world has fallen apart. Not only does her boyfriend leave, but the pillars of her working world also crumble. Unexpectedly gifted with a temporary, out-of-the-ordinary love experience, Rose’s life takes a twist. She sets out to find meaning, not aware that her life has become a microcosm of a world in transition. Caught in a tug-of-war between her old world and a new one, she faces the ups and downs of a pioneer. When the pull threatens to tear her apart, Rose exiles herself from democracy. Leaving Germany for England, she spends happy years as a writer, but then her money runs out. Cut short from her life as an artist and unable to merge back to her old life, she’s confronted with a devastating decision. Jeff Wagner, a good-looking American, who’s divorced, a thwarted poet and journalist, crosses her path and tries to liberate Rose from her fate. She refuses, but leaves him her manuscript with the words, “Read, and if you still think you can help, come back!” On a quest to find the key to Rose’s heart, Jeff must first confront his own past. “True liberation for women implies the liberation of men,” he reads. It dawns on him that Rose’s betterment requires his own evolution. Can he live up to the hopes of a woman equipped with a road map for the future? And, will he agree to the changing role for men in the dawning era of women?

Herein the reader will find a unique, authoritative, and gorgeous guide to the reblooming "old" roses, those wonderful plants developed primarily before 1920, many of which are still available to lend distinction and grace to today's gardens. The author has exhaustively examined original material from France, the United Kingdom, and North America to obtain not only the fullest descriptions and cultural directions ever compiled for these delightful roses, but also the complete history of the development of each group--including, in many cases, remarks by the original breeders themselves. Extensive appendices are provided to assist in the identification, selection, and understanding of cultivars, 2332 of which have entries in this monumental work. Stunning color plates by artists of the era meticulously illustrate these lush blossoms. For those who love roses, this book is truly a rare treasure, celebrating not only their history. From those cultivars favored by visual beauty, but also their fascinating Spain's Moorish conquerors to the favorites of French royalty and Dutch burghers, the author weaves the complex tapestry of rose history for our enjoyment. While writing with the home gardener in mind, Brent Dickerson has also paid very special attention to the needs of the rose researcher and horticultural historian. In short, The Old Rose Advisor will appeal equally to those who want to know--as well as those who want to grow--these very special cultivars of a plant which has been a favorite since the earliest days of history.

This is the second and final volume of the business history of one of the UK's oldest and largest insurance offices, based upon probably the best archive in the business. This volume covers the period from 1870 to the absorption of the Phoenix by Sun Alliance (now Royal and Sun Alliance) in 1984. The Phoenix papers are used to analyse the triumphs and trials, not only of a single insurance venture, but of an entire financial sector in a notably turbulent century. Insurance is concerned with the way people drive, the way they retire, or buy their houses, or invest, or educate their children, or go to war. It follows that a major insurance history also throws light on many aspects of modern British social history. As the great composite offices expanded to offer fire, accident, marine, and life insurance across a single 'counter', so they caught within their dealings an increasingly representative slice of British commercial and social life.
