My name is James Gates. I grew up in the 1940s and 50s, in a diverse hostile social environment in a complex time. This environment was governed by insanity, bigotry, fear and inhumanity. But beyond all the madness, a sense of hopelessness induced a measure of tolerance that created a guarded feeling of happiness and well being, yet tainted by fear. As I observed and experienced the blatant inhumanities associated with bigotry and other flaws, I realized that I was in a unique position to analyze the relationship between human behavior and the natural instincts that governed it. This book is an assembly of poetry and philosophy based purely on my experiences and observations. It was my way of understanding what I felt was the basic fundamental functioning of humanity. It appeared only fitting that I name the book, The Essence of Humanity.

Spending forty years in a cryo-stasis pod is not Bobby Porter's idea of a good time. Not his fault he got left behind on that blasted asteroid ship. And waking up in the arms of aliens, the only human on a ship once filled with humans (no one told him the blasted pods recycled everything), could've been a real nightmare. Especially for a second-rate systems tech with only one real gift: the gift of gab-complete with the ability to pick up new languages in a flash. But Bobby makes the best of a bad situation and ends up with a pretty good deal.Until the aliens decide to give humanity a chance to join their alliance, and the universe as Bobby knows it disintegrates around him. Seems there's a couple more players in this game of space chess: an arrogant CEO who knows he's humanity's savior and an alien empire (not Bobby's aliens-real alien aliens) determined to dominate mankind-or exterminate the entire human species.Surprising to Bobby and everyone who knows him, the systems tech finds himself holding the key to humanity's survival. One question stands out above all others: Can he find the "door" the key unlocks before the bad guys, aka mean, nasty aliens, find him?

During the summer of 1979, as a young medical student, author Alphonsus Obayuwana was awarded a prestigious national grant to do a two-year research on Human Hope; little did he know it would take over thirty years of his adult life to sufficiently complete the project to his personal satisfaction. His three major findings and irrefutable conclusions, following three decades of scientific research, are summarized in The Five Sources of Human Hope: Mirror of Our Humanity. Obayuwana thoroughly explains where, how, why, when, and from what five sources humans routinely find Hope in life. He demystifies Hope and takes it forever out of abstraction. "This book is as educational as it is inspiring. A very thought provoking thesis on the essence of human life. Congratulations and well done!" -Dr. Kingsley E. Iyamu Board certified psychiatrist "An enlightening book with a very fresh approach and novel look at Human Hope." -Dr. Ann Carter Psychologist, author, and professor "Without a doubt ... the best book I have ever read on the subject of Hope. Truly mandatory reading for every teacher, parent, and mentor." -Fumi V. Olu-Osifo School principal, educator, parent
