Churchill was by no means a spontaneous orator, and it was claimed by one of his acolytes that for every minute of a speech he had prepared for an hour. Whether true or not, this suggests an incredibly serious approach to speech-making and its high priority for the great statesman. Perhaps part of his success lay in his utterly self-confident character and strange unconsciousness of the adverse reaction that he could and often did create among friend and foe alike. Churchill was one of only two Prime Ministers to be named a 'professional' writer, and throughout his life his writing and words were not only instrumental in inspiring great loyalty and affection among a wide spectrum of people, but also a means of financing his extravagant lifestyle. What remains at the forefront of the minds of most is the energy which he afforded the prosecutions of the Second World War, and his unerring ear for what to say and how to say it.

Looking at defining moments in Winston Churchill's life and revealing his key principles, philosophies and decisions, this book will teach you how to think just like Churchill. Remembered for his leadership during the Second World War, Churchill's commitment to 'never surrender', along with his stirring speeches and radio broadcasts, helped inspire British resistance to the Nazi threat when Britain stood alone against an occupied Europe. But as well as a hugely successful politician, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a journalist, historian and a writer, winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. How to Think Like Churchill reveals the essential principles behind this fascinating leader, exploring the defining moments and enduring speeches that have made him one of the most esteemed figures of the twentieth century.

Winston Churchill is probably still the best-known Prime Minster of Great Britain. Born at Blenheim Palace, he joined the army after Harrow, but in 1899 resigned his commission to report on the Boer War. Elected to Parliament in 1900, he served in both Conservative and Liberal governments, and became Chancellor of the Exechequer under Baldwin, A period in the political wilderness was ended by the declaration of the Second World War and his appointment to the Admiralty; after Chamberlain's resignation in 1940 he led a coalition government. He worked closely with Roosevelt and to a lesser degree with Stalin throughout the war. He lost the election of 1945 but became Prime Minister again from 1951 to 1955. His last years saw a return to writing, including his memoirs of the Second World War.

He was the wartime leader who played a major role in saving Britain and the free world. While Hitler threatened the existence of western civilization, Winston Churchill stood firm, and with his actions and inspiring words he rallied people to first oppose and then defeat the evil of Nazism. He was a hero to many, an enemy to some, a complex, contradictory, and endlessly fascinating man who was born during the height of the Victorian era and the British Empire, and he left center stage in the nuclear age. Churchill was an extraordinary man who shaped extraordinary times. This superb publication is an unmissable guide to the life and career of Winston Churchill. It provides a detailed, fully-illustrated study that considers his successes and setbacks, his achievements and controversies, and the remarkable times in which he lived. The stories of Churchill the youthful adventurer, the peacetime politician, and the wartime leader combine to create the full portrait of one of the 20th century’s most compelling figures.
