Now there's a masterfully written guide that shows beginning and recreational skaters the fundamental skills of ice skating. In Ice Skating: Steps to Success, Karin K "nzle-Watson--nine-time Swiss National Champion, former Professional World Champion, and one of skating's best instructors--shares with readers the steps that she and many of her students learned on their way to becoming elite competitive skaters. Most instruction books available on ice skating tend to focus on advanced jumps or spins, assuming the reader will learn the basics through professional instruction. Ice Skating: Steps to Success, however, covers fundamental skills in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Part of the highly popular Steps to Success Series, this book includes 11 steps (chapters) that progress from basic to intermediate skills. It features over 300 illustrations that make it possible to learn proper form and technique. Readers will learn how to: - attain the posture and control required for basic skills; - use standard methods of gaining forward and backward speed; - execute four different methods of stopping; - fall properly and get up easily; - change direction without loss of control; and - control the skate edges in order to prepare for advanced maneuvers, including jumps, spins, and footwork. With Ice Skating: Steps to Success, beginning and recreational skaters will develop a solid foundation of skills to help them gain confidence in their abilities and enjoy the sport more.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ...in time with the caller, and of nothing else. NotaBenc. To recapitulate--let every other skater in a combined figure, not being a member of the first pair, remember (i) that his first and most important duty is to watch the caller; (2) that his next most important duty is to watch all the other skaters, so that he skates in such relationship to them and to the caller, that the general symmetry or "squareness" of the figure is maintained (see Fig. 27); (3) that his last and least important duty is to keep time with his partner, never skating opposite to him unless the latter is skating in his proper position as regards the other skaters, i.e. is keeping "square" with the others in accordance with Fig. 27. Other typical calls belonging to sub-division (a) of Group 1 must next be considered. Inside Twice Back--and Inside Forward.--This is a very difficult call, and is mentioned here because the terms used must be understood, and because it is the counterpart of " twice back--and forward," the skaters starting with the inside, instead of the outside edge forwards. An inside forward three is first skated, and that this should be taken gracefully, it is better (although not essential) that the skaters should approach the centre on either the inside edge forwards or outside edge backwards. The caller would, therefore, have first to give a call which would bring up the skater on one of these edges. The inside forward turn must be started to the right of the centre, if the skater is on the right foot, and when it is completed, the left foot must be put down on the inside edge backwards, and this stroke can only be made gracefully if the foot is placed exactly behind its fellow. The succeeding stroke on to the second...
