Excerpt from The Ethical Aspect of Lotze's Metaphysics N closing his earliest philosophical work, the Metap/zysik Of 1841, Lotze gave expression to the conviction that the true beginning Of metaphysics lies in ethics. After nearly forty years of philosophical activity, he re-aflirmed this conviction in the closing words of the Metaplzysz'k Of 1879, the latest Of his works published during his lifetime. The expression, he admits, is not exact, but he still feels certain of being in the right in seeking the ground of that which should be in that which is.' He further expresses the hope that what may seem unacceptable in this view may be justified in a future work. Unfortunately, his death, in July, 1881, prevented the appearance Of the third and last division Of his System def which was to have treated of the philosophy Of religion, morals, and esthetics. The little volumes Of outlines from his lecture-notes in part make good this loss, yet Lotze's system must remain incomplete, and that too in what is, in a certain sense, the keystone Of the structure. It is the writer's aim in what follows to show not merely that Lotze's system is pervaded by his ethical views, and by esthetic ideals scarcely to be distinguished from ethical, but rather to show that his most characteristic metaphysical doctrines grow out Of ethical conceptions, that these conceptions are an essential factor in his metaphysics, that without them his speculative theory Of the universe lacks both completeness and coherence. Excerpt from The Theory of Abstract Ethics The present work is the result of long reflections, but was actually called forth by Professor J uvalta's Old and New Problem of Morality, to which my attention was drawn by Mr Benn's review in Mind (january, The instantaneous impression made by the review, in spite of the reviewer's disagreement with the author, was, This is the doctrine of which I was in search. Though awakened from dogmatic slumber by Re nouvier (mind and the Critique Philosophique, I had for long continued the attempt to derive the ethical law of justice from ends or goods. This is of course the tradition of English ethics; and my own resistance to Renouvier's Kantianism was only one expression of the effort of English thought to avoid the a priori. The a priori, however, in some sense, cannot be avoided. English Experientialism, largely justified though it was and is, must inevitably be modified in the end by the Continental Rationalism that found its most powerful expression in Kant. Excerpt from The Rational Good: A Study in the Logic of Practice The following chapters were originally written in 1908 - 9, in amplification of a sketch of ethical theory contained in my Morals in Evolution, which had been published three years earlier. I was not, however, satisfied with the result, and put the manuscript aside for several years. It has now been almost entirely re-written. My Obliga tions to various writers on Psychology and Ethics will be manifest, but the general theory which most nearly corresponds to the central doctrine of the work is one which I heard expounded in a paper read In New York in 1911 by a distinguished lecturer on Ethics, and have never met with again in print. Mr. J. A. Hobson kindly read the work in its original form, and made many valuable criticisms. Mr. A. W. Perris has performed the same service to the revised work, and several alterations and additions are due to his sugges tions. I have also to thank him for revising the proofs. Was There A Lutheran Metaphysics written by Joar Haga and has been published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-23 with Religion categories.

Joar Haga traces the Lutheran doctrine of communicatio idiomatum, the exchange of properties between the natures of Christ, as it developed in some important controversies of the 16th and the early 17th Century. Regarding it as the nerve of his soteriology, Luther stressed the intimacy of the two natures in Christ to such a degree that it threatened to end the peaceful relationship between theology and philosophy. At the same time as the Wittenberg reformers broke with certain strains of their philosophical heritage, they would insist that the continuation of Christ's bodily presence was a reality in sacrament and nature (!), irreducible to a sign or to a memory. On the other hand, they did not want to be ignorant of the claims of reason. By rejecting the classic framework for a peaceful coexistence of philosophy and theology on the one hand, and insisting on Christ's bodily reality on the other, the quest for a new concept of how philosophy and theology related was implicitly stated.Earlier research identified two traditions of Lutheran Christology: One train of thought follows Luther in emphasising the difference between philosophy and theology. This can be seen in the Tübingen solutions where Johannes Brenz and Theodor Thumm are the most interesting thinkers. Another train of thought can be found in the conservative pupils of Melanchthon, where Martin Chemnitz and Balthasar Mentzer are the most prominent theologians. This research does not merely group the thinkers within the confines of a tradition, but underlines their individual contributions to an open-ended history.

This book provides a new approach to Albrecht Ritschl’s theology. Leif Svensson argues that Ritschl’s theological project must be related to three cultural developments – historical criticism, materialism, and anti-Lutheran polemics – and understood in the context of the de-Christianization of the Bildungsbürgertum in nineteenth-century Germany. “Albrecht Ritschl remains the great unknown of nineteenth-century theology. In this important study, Leif Svensson sheds new light on Ritschl’s thought by relating it to contemporaneous social and cultural developments. Rooted in deep familiarity with German intellectual life of the time, the book convincingly illustrates the value of a history of theology that is mindful of its various contexts.” – Johannes Zachhuber University of Oxford “I confess I was hesitant to blurb a book on Ritschl, but then I read it. Svensson’s well researched presentation of Ritschl’s thought is compelling and forceful. I highly recommend this book.” – Stanley Hauerwas Duke Divinity School “Svensson’s work ably places Ritschl’s contribution to theology in the broader context of the intellectual and cultural history of the nineteenth century. Students of Protestant theology and thought and all interested in the complex relationship between Christian theology and modernity will learn something of value from this important study.” – Thomas Albert Howard Valparaiso University

Excerpt from An Outline of Philosophy in America VI. Reeent Idealism. Within the last twen ty-five years systematic and critical idealism has been greatly stimulated by the direct influence of the German Universities on American students. The works of British authors, chiefly those of A. Campbell Fraser, J. Hutcheson Stirling, Edward Caird and perhaps above all Thomas H. Green, have been widely read. The influence of Kant, Hegel and especially Lotze has been and is active. T. H. Green and Lotze are undoubtedly the more prominent influences among American thinkers at the present time. The former has the more influence in ethical speculation, the latter in metaphysics. The elements of mechanism and pantheism in Lotze's work are generally so construed as to bring them into essential harmony with Hegel and Green; and the'rnethod of Lotze in making reconciliations in metaphysics and epistemology, accompanied with his pronounced ethical and religious spirit, have brought his system into growing favor. But the most important step toward arousing interest in Idealistic Philosophy was made by pvil/iam T. Harris, born 1835, now United States Commissioner of Education. In 1867 he founded at St. Louis the Journal of Speculative Philosophy which, thoughprimarily devoted to Idealism, made its influ ence felt in every department of philosophy. Among its American contributors were Alcott, Brinton, Hall, James, Mead, Morris, Royce and Watson. Many works of German authors have received translation and exposition in its pages. For the first three years more than half of its articles were from the pen of Dr. Harris. He has also written an introduction to Kroeger's translation of Fichte's Science of Knowledge, London, 1889; an Exposition of Hegel's Logic, Chicago, 1890; Introduction to Philosophy, New York, 1890; and Philosophy in Johnson's Encyclopaedia. Leibniz, Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel have had special exposition in Grigg's Philos ophic Classics, edited by Professor George S. Morris, 1840-1889, who has also published British Thought and Thinkers, Chicago, 1880. Professor Charles C. Everett, of Harvard University, follows Hegel in Science of Thought, Boston, 1869. Professor John Watson, of Queen's College, Kingston, Canada, holds an intellectual Idealism by which he means, the doctrine that man is capable of knowing reality as it actually is, and that reality when so known is absolutely rational. Kant and his English Critics, 1881; Comte, Mill and Spencer; an Outline of Philosophy, 1895 Hedonistic Theories, from Aristippus to Spencer, 1895, New York. Hermann Lotze written by William R. Woodward and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-09 with History categories.

As a philosopher, psychologist, and physician, the German thinker Hermann Lotze (1817-81) defies classification. Working in the mid-nineteenth-century era of programmatic realism, he critically reviewed and rearranged theories and concepts in books on pathology, physiology, medical psychology, anthropology, history, aesthetics, metaphysics, logic, and religion. Leading anatomists and physiologists reworked his hypotheses about the central and autonomic nervous systems. Dozens of fin-de-siècle philosophical contemporaries emulated him, yet often without acknowledgment, precisely because he had made conjecture and refutation into a method. In spite of Lotze's status as a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century intellectual thought, no complete treatment of his work exists, and certainly no effort to take account of the feminist secondary literature. Hermann Lotze: An Intellectual Biography is the first full-length historical study of Lotze's intellectual origins, scientific community, institutional context, and worldwide reception.
