Excerpt from The Ethics of Jesus and Social Progress For some years it has been my pleasant task to instruct a group of young ministers in the Ethics of Jesus. At the same time I have been pursuing special studies in the science of Sociology, if it may be called a science - and with certain qualifications it may be fairly regarded as such; at any rate, it is the most important field of scientific study which now engages the attention of men. This book is the resultant of the convergence of these two lines of study and teaching. The two questions to which I have sought to give an answer are, first, What sort of society would the ethical principles of Jesus result in if actually reduced to practice! Second, How far would such a social organization correspond to the goal of social development as the trend of that development is made apparent by Sociology? My conviction is that the more definitely the goal of social evolution is worked out by the students of social science, and the more adequately the concept of the Kingdom of God is grasped by the students of the gospel, the more nearly they will be found to correspond. Some readers, perhaps, will regard it as a serious defect that so little attention is given to the problems of criticism. Excerpt from The Ethics of Jesus and Social Progress It is my earnest hope that this book may prove to be not altogether useless in the effort of this generation to grasp more comprehensively the social meaning of Christianity and to organize society according to its principles. Biblical Ethics And Social Change written by Stephen Mott Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-23 with Social Science categories.

This scholarly synthesis of biblical studies and Christian social ethics is designed to provide a biblical argument for intentional institutional change on behalf of social justice. Stephen Charles Mott provides a biblical and ethical guide on ways to implement that change. The first part of the book, providing the biblical theology of intentional social change, deals with the central concepts in biblical and theological ethics: grace, evil, love, justice, and the Reign of God. Christian social change must be rooted not only in justice, but in the grace received through the death and resurrection of Christ. The second part evaluates ethical and theological methods for carrying out that intentional social change. It offers a study of evangelism, counter community, civil disobedience, armed revolution, and political reform. It shows the contribution of each as well as the strong limitations of each used in isolation. A recurring theme of the book is the scriptural insistence on the priority of justice as taking upon oneself the cause of the oppressed. Justice is understood on bringing back into the community those who are near to falling out of it. Political authority has a vital role in social change for justice. It is essential that a Christian use all available and legitimate means of meeting basic needs by providing for all what is essential for inclusion in society. In this revised edition, Mott updates the contemporary illustrations and includes his own further reflections in the last thirty years on this topic.

Based on a careful reading of Pope Benedict’s 2009 encyclical Caritas in Veritate (“Charity in Truth”), the essays in this substantial volume explore how an encounter with the person of Jesus Christ is the true basis for economic and social progress. The authors are experts in a wide range of disciplines -- theology, philosophy, biblical studies, political science, economics, finance, environmental science -- and represent a broad spectrum of Catholic thought, from liberal to conservative. The first book in English to offer an overarching interpretation of Pope Benedict’s groundbreaking encyclical, Jesus Christ: The New Face of Social Progress will inform anyone interested in Catholic social doctrine, and its depth of insight will offer fresh inspiration to serious followers of Jesus Christ.
