In the spring of 2010 the General Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) approved the establishment of the Macro-prudential Research Network (MaRs) with the objective of developing core conceptual frameworks, models and/or tools that would provide research support in order to improve macro-prudential supervision in the European Union (EU). MaRs was set up for an initial period of two years, during which time it has followed three work streams: macro-financial models linking financial stability and the performance of the economy - work stream 1 (WS1); early warning systems and systemic risk indicators - work stream 2 (WS2); and assessing contagion risks - work stream 3 (WS3). This report summarises the results of this work and progress made by the network after two years. It provides an overview of the activities of the network, reviews the findings of each of the three work streams, focusing in particular on the research questions asked by the General Council at the start of the network, and concludes with an overall assessment and a plan for the remaining work to be conducted before the network is closed at the end of 2013 -- EU Bookshop.

"As the uncertainty relating to the sovereign debt crisis in some Euro Area Member States continued over the last two years, the extent and potential consequences of the spillovers between euro area Member States' economic, financial and budgetary situations has become increasingly evident. Building on the Six Pack on economic governance which entered into force December 2011, the European Parliament and the Council adopted two further pieces of legislation aimed at strengthening economic coordination and surveillance in the euro area. The so-called Two-Pack entered into force at the end of May 2013.This paper focuses on the regulation on the strengthening of economic and budgetary surveillance of Member States experiencing or threatened with serious difficulties with respect to their financial stability in the euro area (i.e. the regulation on enhanced surveillance) and attempts to explain the key objectives of the regulation."--Document home page.

“An insider of the European Commission since the late 1980s, Marco Buti is a unique guide through the two crises of the 21st century.” - Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy “Marco Buti and I have not always agreed on issues of economic policy. But I cannot think of somebody more qualified to tell us about the travails of Europe since the Great Financial Crisis. He was there all along.” - Olivier Blanchard, Senior Fellow at Peterson Institute for International Economics “This collection of VoXEU contributions shows how history is made. Marco Buti, a man inside the vortex of the making of European monetary history, produced and published a steady stream of reflections, analysis and reform proposals on VoxEU." - Beatrice Weder Di Mauro, President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research “To go from point A to point B in Europe is rarely a straight line. Actually, trying to take a straight line is often the best way not to get to destination.” This is one of the lessons drawn by Marco Buti, one of the very few top policy makers who went through the fi nancial and the sovereign debt crises and, lately, the pandemic crisis, which plagued the European Union over the past twelve years. This book, which brings together his real time input to the economic and policy debate, traces the intellectual journey leading to the design and implementation under duress of diffi cult policies and controversial reforms. His contribution is the graphic demonstration of Jean Monnet’s dictum that Europe will be forged in crises and will be the outcome of the responses to those crises. The book explains the analytical and empirical foundations of European policy choices that involved a delicate balance between economic, institutional and political considerations. What emerges is a new compass that helps understand the policy strategy the EU has adopted to fi ght the economic fallout of the pandemic.

Convergence Criteria For Joining The Euro written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with categories.

Agreed in Maastricht by the EU Member States in 1991 as part of the preparations for introduction of the euro, the convergence criteria are defined as a set of five economic and legal indicators designed to ensure economic convergence between interested non-euro area countries with the Member States of the euro area. The criteria include price stability, sound and sustainable public finances, long-term interest rate and exchange rate stability. Exchange rate stability is demonstrated if the Member State concerned has participated in the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II) for a period of least two years without severe tensions. These legal conditions must be met by EU countries, in order to adopt the euro. Convergence reports are issued every two years, or when there is a specific request from a Member State to assess its readiness to join the euro area. The next one is expected in spring 2018. All EU Member States, euro and non-euro countries, take part in the European Semester of policy coordination which is also a vehicle to achieve real economic convergence.

In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.
