Excerpt from The Evolution of Architectural Ornament If this book contains, of deliberation, any novel features, these consist mainly in its general arrangement, classifying architectural ornament as to its bases, found either in vegetable or animal forms of life, or in straight or curved lines and in the tracing of Gothic forms almost wholly to nature, those of the thirteenth century representing spring, followed in regular succession by those of summer, autumn and winter, alike in England and on the Continent. The appendix chapter on some capitals which the author sketched in Alexandria in 1911 is also, it is believed, quite new, except that a paper on the subject has been read before the Society of Architects. Third, the climatic influence, which determines the character of the buildings themselves, the size of their windows, and the projection and inclination of the roofs. As, for instance, in tropical countries, under the glaring sun, it is desirable to have small windows and dark, cool interiors, with projecting cornices that will shade the sides of the building from the vertical rays of the midday sun; whereas, in cold countries the roof must be steep to shed the rain and snow, and the windows large to admit the sunshine. Fourth, the religious influence, which will affect the habits and customs of the people. Excerpt from The Architecture of the Renaissance in France, Vol. 1: A History of the Evolution of the Arts of Building, Decoration, and Garden Design Under Classical Influence From 1495 to 1830 In the matter of illustration it has been my aim to place before the reader in the first place, of course, photographs and modern drawings of buildings, now, or till recently standing, but also the vanished buildings and unexecuted projects which throw an equally strong light on the ideas which inspired the work of successive ages. That this must generally be done by reproducing the drawings of by-gone generations of designers, so variously different in character from those of our own day, is in itself a gain, since the graphic method of presentment adopted by a du Cerceau, or a Marot, a Neufforge or a Fontaine is one element in his conception of design, and should be taken into consideration in the study and appreciation of the style in which he worked. The subject of this history is so wide that it necessarily includes much matter of a controversial nature. This turns principally on the dates and authorship of buildings anterior to the seventeenth century, whose records are fragmentary or non-existent. The limits of these volumes have obliged me in many cases to assert facts or probabilities, without supporting such assertions by arguments or reference to authorities. Those who wish to investigate such matters further will, in most cases, find the points fully discussed in the serried pages of Geymiiller, who, if his conclusions occasionally appear to go beyond the point which his argument warrants, never fails to set forth with the utmost candour all the available evidence, together with the Opinions of other writers.
