Excerpt from The Evolution of Man Whoever claims to be an educated man, a man who thinks, must acquire a knowledge of the outline of modern scientific research and of the theories concerning the descent of man. No thought is so essential and sublime as that about ourselves. One may be skeptical as to the value of these things, but before any discussion of them is possible, one must, above all, think. Excerpt from The Evolution of Man, Vol. 2: Man, Culture and Society On November 24, 1859, Charles Darwin at last saw in print the manu script over which he had labored for almost a quarter of a century, the book whose ponderous title has become the familiar Origin of Species. The world had been waiting, and in a single day the first edition of was sold out. One hundred years later, the day was celebrated as marking one of those events that influence the career of man by changing his perspective of himself and his place in the universe. In December of 1955 the University of Chicago began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bring ing to bear, on the subject of evolution, current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958, they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions Of the issues in evolution which were to be held for the public during the five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The dis eussions were based on the papers that had been distributed in ad vance, but the papers themselves were not delivered at the Celebration. Excerpt from Human Evolution: An Inductive Study of Man If all progress towards higher and nobler ideals of life start within the personality of men, it follows that the wish for the fulfilment of such must result in alteration of our social forms of existence; since society has continually altered in the past it would be absurd to suppose that it will not do so in the future. The great question for the vital tenth of mankind at present is - what will be the constitution of the social forms that will evolve from out Of our competitive commercial civilisation? This book is one of many that attempt to answer this question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Man in the Light of Evolution Meanwhile many have discussed the evolution of family, society, morals, and religion who have not fully recognized the complexity of the prob lem. Some have looked at man entirely in the light of lower animals, almost as if he were a mere clam or worm, and have formed theories of human evolution adequate only to these lower forms. We have had many gladiatorial theo ries in spite of Professor Huxley's warning. Others, recognizing more clearly man's unique position, have practically discarded all laws of evolution applicable to lower forms. Some such writers have almost neglected the power of natu ral selection. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Evolution and Man's Progress Because OF their special knowledge, scientists and scholars may be in a position to see some of the future consequences and costs of current social practices before they become evident to decision makers, either in large enterprises like governments or small enter prises like families. Few have either the time or the talent to become informed about long-range implications arising from advances in sci ence and technology. And yet in the twentieth century, as compared with previous centuries, the impact of science and technology upon our ways of living and our destiny has become paramount. The mush rooming clouds of new notions and new patterns of behavior are altering the nature and circumstances of human life more within a few years than they were altered over centuries in the past. There is no guarantee that these new circumstances are going to be stable or viable; instead, there is a probability that a civilization, whose decision makers operate in ignorance of where this onrushing current of events is taking us, may unwittingly be headed for disaster. Excerpt from The Evolution of Man: A Popular Scientific Study The main theme of the work is that, in the course of their embryonic development, all animals, including man, pass roughly and rapidly through a series of forms which represents the succession of their ancestors in the past. After a severe and extensive study of embryonic phenomena, Haeckel has drawn up a law (in the ordinary scientific sense) to this effect, and has called it the biogenetic law, or the chief law relating to the evolution (genesis) of life (bios). This law is widely and increasingly accepted by embryologists and zoologists. It is enough to quote a recent' declaration of the great American zoologist, President D. Starr Jordan It is, of course, true that the life-history of the individual is an epitome of the life-history of the race while a distinguished German zoologist (sarasin) has described it as being of the same use to the biologist as spectrum analysis is to the astronomer.
