Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ...REGULATION AND CLEANLINESS OF FLATS. 1. The flats are to be scrubbed twice a week with fresh water and soap, i.e., on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. 2. On other days the deck is to be scrubbed where there are no deck cloths, and the paintwork and brightwork cleaned. 3. The ladders are to be holy stoned every morning, but sand is not to be used. 4. The Captains of Parts will report their flats cleaned to the Officer in charge of flats, or where there is no such Officer, to the Executive Officer; and the men who are cleaning the flat will not leave the flat till dismissed by the Captain of the Part. 5. After the flats are reported cleaned, they are to be inspected by the Officer in charge, who will, after inspection, if satisfied that the flat is properly clean, give permission for the men to be dismissed. 6. Should the flat not be properly cleaned at the expiration of the time allowed, report is to be made of it to the Executive Officer; and if circumstances should not permit of its being remedied at once, the same men are to clean the flat in the forenoon. 7. The lanterns of flats are to be cleaned by the sweepers of the flats, when they have finished scrubbing the upper deck, while the remainder are washing down. They are responsible for their being in good order at all times. DUTIES OF THE LAMP TRIMMER, 1. He is to have charge of lamp-room, all lamps and lanterns. 2. To issue all oil and candles according to scale provided for him. 3. All lamps and lanterns, except those kept in Officers' Cabins, and those specially detailed, are to be kept clean by him. 4. He is to place all lanterns for the undermentioned in the place appointed every evening by 4 o'clock in winter and 6 in summer, viz.: Mates of Decks, Master at Arms, Ship's...
