[Abstract] This study utilized the heuristic model of qualitative research to explore the question, "What is the experience of relocation during adolescence." All 6 phases of the heuristic research design were used during this study. Those included: initial engagement, immersion into the question, incubation, illumination, explication, and narrative synthesis. The heuristic model was used to incorporate my experiences throughout the course of the study. Current and past literature were reviewed to obtain awareness of the information currently available. There were no studies found that matched the parameters of my study. After conducting interviews with my coresearchers I was able to analyze the data. The analysis of the data revealed 5 themes, which included: 1) making friends, 2) depressed feelings, 3) physicality and emotionality, 4) support of parents, and 5) change in self-concept. The 5 themes contribute to understanding the experience of those who relocated during adolescence. All six of the co-researchers described ways in which they dealt with the relocation and how it affected every aspect of their lives. This study is important to the lives of adolescents everywhere. It lends itself to educators in helping children adjust to new schools and to parents in helping their children adjust to the new residence.

From the sociological point of view, adolescence traditionally has been described as a period of physical maturity and social immaturity. Adolescents reach physical adulthood before they are capable of functioning well in adult social roles. The disjunction between physical capabilities and socially allowed independence and power and the concurrent status ambiguities are viewed as stressful for the adolescent in modern Western society. It has been assumed that the need to disengage from parents during these years will result in high levels of rebellion and parent-child conflict. Moving into Adolescence follows students as they make a major life course transition from childhood into early adolescence. Substantial controversy has been generated within the behavioral sciences concerning the difficulty of adolescence as a transitional period. On the one hand, there are those who characterize the period as an exceptionally and necessarily stressful time in the life course. On the other hand, many investigators treat this view of adolescence as their straw man. To them, the supposed tumult of adolescence is just that--supposed and mythical. The purpose of this book is to study the transition from childhood into early and middle adolescence in order to investigate change along a wide variety of psychosocial dimensions with a particular focus on the self-image. The authors investigate the impact of timing of pubertal change and also the movement from an intimate, elementary school context into a large-scale secondary school environment. The first major movement into a large-scale organizational context may cause difficulty for the child, as may the dramatic changes of puberty. In addition, gender differences and changes in gender differences are studied. Both short- and long-term consequences of transition are examined focusing on is the role of pubertal change and school transition.

Adolescence is a time when the social world expands, a time of increasing engagement beyond the family sphere to the school, the peer group, and the workplace. These contexts may present experiences that differ greatly in their tone and content, either contributing to or hindering satisfaction and a positive sense of self. This book examines how the constellation of stressors and rewards in various life domains influences adolescent adjustment. The theoretical framework is Simmons' "arena of comfort": a context for individuals to relax and to rejuvenate, so that potentially stressful changes and experiences in another arena can be endured or mastered. The concept of the arena of comfort highlights the adolescent's active role in the developmental process, as young people seek out and alternate between contexts that provide challenge and those that provide solace. By providing social support, a comfort arena strengthens the young person so that challenges in other life spheres can be dealt with. This book uses data from 1,000 adolescents to address key questions derived from the "arena of comfort" thesis: In which arenas of their lives do adolescents typically find comfort? Does the experience of comfort differ by gender, socioeconomic level, and other dimensions of social background? Do sources of comfort change as the adolescent moves through high school? Do adolescents typically find comfort in just one or two or in several arenas? Where are they most likely to experience this positive, comfortable state? Are adolescents who find comfort in a greater number of arenas better off, in terms of their mental health and achievement, than those who are comfortable in fewer contexts? Are some arenas more consequential for adolescent adjustment than others? Can an arena of comfort in one setting, in fact, buffer the effects of stressful experiences in another context? The results of this research indicate that making adolescents' contexts more supportive and comfortable will be reflected in improved mental health and achievement. This book will be of interest to all practitioners and researchers concerned with the mental health of adolescents.

This study brings to light the specific experiences of seven adolescents who formerly resided in the Robert Taylor Homes and relocated during the years of its demolition which was initiated by the HOPE VI legislation and the Chicago Housing Authority's Plan for Transformation. I will specifically look at the personal, educational and social effects of relocating to various communities within Central Illinois on these particular youth. Through the use of focus groups, participant and naturalistic observation, in-depth interviews and the use of photos I hope to capture the relocation experiences of each participant. The uniqueness of each adolescent is inextricably tied to the years of neglect and abuse by the Chicago Housing Authority, City Council, numerous federal, state and local government officials, the Real Estate Board as well as other entities within city's infrastructure. Whether it was de facto segregation or complacency regarding the lives that were being shattered within the 28 hi-rises, due to infestation of drugs, excessive amount of violence and the dominating influence of gangs, exploitation prevailed at any rate. This negligence contributed to generations of families being caught in a cycle of poverty that cannot be remedied by simply changing the location of their residence. Hosts of former residents have attempted to relocate outside the Chicago metropolitan area and have faced considerable challenges as they seek to transition into new communities and schools, which are oftentimes much different than those that they are more accustomed to. As the final building of the largest public housing development in the world is slated for demolition and families are forced to relocate, our nation will be deeply concerned about the ways in which the former residents were impacted.
